Herentals gun for 2016 PSL promotion

HARARE - New World Navi Northern Region Division One side Herentals FC are hoping to defy odds by winning promotion into the Premiership in their first season in the second-tier league.

Herentals will be participating in the division after acquiring the franchise of the now defunct Bindura United.

The side has already put in some impressive performances in the pre-season ahead of the start of the league programme on April 4.

Last month, Herentals FC won a four-team tournament that included Castle Premiership sides Buffaloes, Flame Lily and fellow lower division side DStv Rangers.

They followed that win with another triumph in a four-team tournament that also included top flight sides Buffaloes, CAPS United and Whawha.

The college team beat Buffaloes 4-3 after a penalty shoot-out in the final of the tournament.

Herentals FC team manager Oliver Chirenga believes his side is very strong and they will be gunning for the World Navi Northern Region Division One League title.

“We are happy with our preparations, I think we have got a very strong squad which can fight for honours this upcoming season,” Chirenga told the Daily News.

“Our aim as a club is to win the title and gain promotion into the PSL. I’m very confident that we are going to put an impressive performance against perennial campaigners.”

Chirenga said they blended their junior players with some seniors to come up with a strong squad.

“We took some junior players from our college and added them to some senior players we already have and as a club we need to contribute a lot in the development of Zimbabwe football.

“Everyone in the team knows the importance for us to win the promotion ticket and I think the team will be ready when the season starts.

“I want to tell you one thing, we started this project seven years ago with the hope of stamping authority in Zimbabwean football, it is not a club that just wants to do well and get the third or fourth place, we want to win trophies.”

This season will see seven teams joining the league, six from Division Two and Black Rhinos, who were relegated from the Premier League last season.

Zatex FC, Blue Jets, DC Africa, Cargo Carriers, ARV and Darwin United are the six teams who are coming from Division Two.

Last season, Flame Lily won the second-tier division championship ahead of second-placed Gunners.
