Young Warriors bank on Mahachi

HARARE - Mamelodi Sundowns winger Kuda Mahachi is expected to join the Young Warriors’ camp for Sunday’s 2015 All-Africa Games qualifier against Cameroon at Rufaro Stadium.

The Young Warriors went into camp at Chikurubi last week and Mahachi was included in the provisional squad but there were doubts over his availability after his club reportedly refused to release him as the game falls outside the Fifa calendar.

Calisto Pasuwa, who is bracing for his first competitive assignment as Young Warriors coach, has not had the brightest of starts to his reign as he endured postponement to his planned early preparations due to non-availability of players.

Clubs do not have the obligation to release their players for these qualifiers and Netherlands-based Marvelous Nakamba and Macaulley Bonne, who plays for Colchester United in England, have already been ruled out of Sunday’s match.

Akim Abdular, who plays for Sunshine Dodges in Australia, and United States-based Judar Rashirai are the only two foreign-based players who have joined camp.

The team will get down to serious business this morning when they intensify preparations for Sunday’s match.

This leaves Pasuwa with less than a week to fine-tune his team ahead of the meeting with the West Africans.

Young Warriors team manager Charles Mukaronda said: “We are not getting any joy with most foreign clubs.

“The challenge we are facing is that some of the players will not make it.

“We wanted all the players who have been called to come. The good thing however, is that Kuda Mahachi could still make it.

“He said he can be released three or four days before the game, so we are expecting him to join others any time from tomorrow (today).

The Young Warriors’ preparations for this tie have not been ideal but Mukaronda is optimistic they will overcome Cameroon.

“The good thing is that those who are in camp are showing a lot of determination,” he added.

“We are looking forward to do well and put ourselves in a better position to progress to the next round.

“We still have good players and we hope they will do us proud come Sunday.”
