Justin Kersten excels at Curro

HARARE - Falcon College pupil Justin Kersten placed eighth at the Curro SA Juniors International played at the Durbanville Golf Club, Cape Town, South Africa to finish as Zimbabwe’s highest placed golfer.

The Bulawayo Golf Club-based golfer shot rounds of 78, 69, 70 for a total one-over-par 217, seven strokes adrift of tournament winner Van der Merwe Altin Christiaan of South Africa.

The top South Africa amateur golfer shot rounds of 76, 67 and 67 at the prestigious junior tournament that attracts players from all over the world.

“In a field of 105 boys and 41 girls from 23 countries this was an excellent performance from the Bulawayo-based player,” Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association said in a statement yesterday.

“The windy conditions in venues like Cape Town always play tricks on our land locked players as shown on the first day when our players lost ground at the very start.”

Meanwhile, the rest of the Zimbabwean junior players found the going tough.

Jack Allard finished in position 26 with scores of 81, 70, and 72.

Allard was followed by the trio of Mbongeni Maphosa, Stuart Krog and Kieran Vincent in position 38 on nine-over-par 225.

In position 64 was the young David Amm, playing in his first international tournament whilst promising golfer Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa finished in position 88.

Making up the rest of the Zimbabwean players was Tadiwa Dzuda (91), Tari Fundira (96) and Irvine Nembaware (98).

The only Zimbabwean girl at the tournament was Danielle Bekker who finished the tournament in position 36 in the girls section.

The next ZJGA event see the country’s top four junior players battling for honours at the All Africa Junior Golf Challenge set for Lusaka, Zambia in May.
