Pangiso claims Old Mutual RB Marathon Relay Challenge

HARARE - Kelvin Pangiso won this years’ Old Mutual RB Marathon Relay Challenge shrugging off the challenge of Lyno Muchena who eventually settled for second place.

Pangiso was the pick of the crop in the lucrative race, winning in a time of 2,18.54sec to pocket $1 500 with Muchena finishing in 2,19,00sec and walking away $1 000 richer while Jonathon Chinyoka who finished third on 2,19.13sec pocketed $500.

In the women’s race Olivia Chitate came first in 2.51.05sec while Faith Nyasango finished second in 2.52.03sec with Tabitha Tsatsa settled for third place on 2.54.05sec.

Chitate walked away $1 500 richer while Nyasango pocketed $1 000 with Tsatsa walking away $500 richer.

The Old Mutual RB Marathon Relay Challenge lived up to its billing by drawing a field of more than 500 athletes.

Event organisers, the Harare Athletics Club (Hac), said this year’s revamped edition of the marathon was the biggest they had organised to date.

“This was the biggest event Hac has organised for years, with over 500 runners on the road,” Hac captain, Martin Webster said.

“We had a total of 520 runners who entered, split as follows; marathon — 109, relay reams, 42 with 198 runners, fun runs (5,10 and 21km) — 213. Last year’s entry was 342 with 98 marathon runners.

“The relay format worked, generated excitement at the club, and has the potential to become a main attraction. We would really like to see more of the 215 fun runners competing as teams!”

This was the third year in succession that Old Mutual has been sponsoring the marathon that serves as a final warm up for the world famous Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.
