Mada wins silver at Africa Champs

HARARE - Zimbabwe's triple jumper Brian Mada emerged as the only bright spark of the country’s campaign at the 12 edition of the CAA Junior Athletics Championship in the Ethiopian capital of Adis Ababa.

Mada won silver with a 15,30 metres jump on Saturday to register Zimbabwe’s only medal at the continental athletics tournament for African athletes aged 19 years or younger.

Algeria’s Hailthem Sebbat won gold with a 15,39-metre jump. The rest of the nine-man athletics team found the going tough with none of the eight track contenders making it to a final.

Nyasha Mutsetse was 10th in the 800 metres race in the heats and did not advance to the finals.

Shingirai Hlanguyo, qualified for the semi-finals in the 200m heats but failed to advance any further. 

By the time of going to print yesterday Zimbabwe was on number 11 on the medal table with only one medal.

Nigeria were leading the medal table with a total of 13 medals that included six gold, four silver and three bronze.

South Africa was in second place with 14 medals that included five gold, five silver and four bronze.

A total of 209 men, 145 women athletes and 172 officials were taking part in the championship.

Ethiopia are hosting continental athletics championship for the second time after the 16th African Senior Athletics Championship in 2008.
