Controversy stalks Zimdancehall Awards

HARARE - After bagging two of the main awards — the Best Male Artist and the Best Song as well the Best Social Message — Tocky Vibes was clearly the biggest winner at the Zimdancehall Awards held at the Harare Showgrounds on Friday.

The 21-year-old Zimdancehall star, who also won two National Arts Merit Awards (Nama) on Valentine’s Day, picked the Song of the Year Award for the hit Mhai.

The Rugare-based artiste’s song Simudza Maoko jointly won the Best Social Message award with Soul Jah Love’s Kuponda Nhamo.

The other big winner on the night was Seh Calaz who retained Best Vocalist Award in addition to  winning the Best Club Hit Song gong for the song Hatimisike.

The video for Seh Calaz’s song Ndinochema was voted the best by Zimdancehall fans.

The Mumota Murikubvira singer must have relished picking more awards than his sworn nemesis Soul Jah Love whose duet with Shinsoman Hativasiye Vane Nyota landed the Best Collaboration Award.

Unlike last year, there were no incidents of violence during the Zimdancehall Awards night. In the run-up to the awards, the organisers had emphasised their determination to stem violence and unnecessary controversy.

Sadly, in their attempt to pacify the usually unruly Zimdancehall fans it would appear that they ended up generating more controversy.

The flurry of joint winners on the night triggered suspicion.

Many in the crowd suspected that the organisers created more joint winners so as to try to give awards to as many artistes as possible and in the process calm down the rival music fans in the audience.

The fact that the awards did not rope in some auditors to verify the votes makes it difficult for the organisers to defend themselves against claims of conspiracy theories.

The other downside of the Zimdancehall Awards was the evident lack of professionalism and decorum among most of the artistes.

There were plenty of losers and very few gracious winners on the night.

Guests were shocked when Killer T who was somehow adjudged to be the most popular Zimdancehall artiste in the ghetto attacked organisers for not giving the Best Artiste Manager Award to his manager Brian Marukira better known as DJ Bimma.

“Ndiani asingazivi kuti DJ Bimma ave nenguva ari manager wangu. Sei asina kupihwa award? Maawards aya anofanira kurongwa nevanhu vanoziva zvemangoma,” shouted Killer T as he was accepting his award.

Seh Calaz’s manager Godfrey Bakasa, who lost the Best Artiste Manager Award to Winky D’s manager Jonathan Banda, was also heard disparaging the award.

“I don’t work to win awards,” shouted Bakasa.

But the most embarrassing part of the awards night was arguably when Lady Squanda mocked the trophy she got for being voted Female Artiste of the Year.

“We deserve better awards not these cheap awards,” said the controversial Lady Squanda.
