Zoc to equip women in sports

HARARE - The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (Zoc) is set to host a women and sports leadership skills seminar over the weekend.

The capacity development programme aims to equip women in lower level sports management with relevant leadership skills.

“This seminar follows up on the 2013 workshop which targeted women in senior and middle sport management positions,” Zoc said in a statement yesterday.

“Despite the 2013 empowerment initiative, it is evident that there are gaps in aspects of sport administration in the National Sport Associations (NSA) such as the failure to provide opportunities for the growth and development of female administrators within the ranks.

“Challenges remain prevalent specifically where women administrators holding lower level positions do not have skills on how to organise and manage sport organisations.

“A simple survey revealed that leadership in sport still remains the preserve of male administrators and only a tenth of the 30 Zoc affiliated NSAs are headed by women.

“The survey also exposed that few of the ‘senior’ women who undertook the skills development session in 2013 went on to participate visibly or actively in leadership or managerial roles.”

The seminar coincides with the International Women’s day celebrations of March 8.
