Dairibord win Standard Chartered tournament

HARARE - Dairibord Zimbabwe will represent Zimbabwe at the Standard Chartered “Road to Anfield” Regional Five-A-Side tournament in Zambia later this month.

Dairibord won the berth to participate at the finals after winning the Standard Chartered Bank Zimbabwe Five-A-Side football tournament at the weekend.

They will now battle with the Zambian and Botswana representatives and the winner of that tournament will represent southern Africa at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium on May 8 where a total of 10 teams from across the Standard Chartered Bank group will battle it out for the Standard Chartered Trophy.

The team that will travel to Anfield, fully sponsored by the bank, will also get a lifetime opportunity to meet with the Reds’ former players and coaches.

Dairibord won the tournament after defeating Flik-Nik in a sudden death penalty shoot-out.

The participating teams were drawn from the Standard Chartered Zimbabwe’s potential and existing clients in its various business segments — commercial clients, corporate and institutional clients and retail clients.

Teams which took part in the tournament were Innscor Appliances, Hunyani Paper & Packaging, Zimpost, Securico, Gateway Primary, OK Zimbabwe, Liquid Telecoms, NFB Logistics, Dairibord Zimbabwe, Innscor Africa, Premier Tobacco, Freight World, Flik-Nik Pvt Ltd, Transerv, Carnotek, Lomagundi College, Quest Paints, Columbus Communications, Crebal Enterprises, Colcare, Group Air and Victory Services.

Commenting on the tournament, Standard Chartered Zimbabwe’s head of Corporate Affairs, Lillian Hapanyengwi said: “The Standard Chartered trophy is hinged on the bank’s Liverpool FC sponsorship.

“While it has been running in various Standard Chartered Bank markets for more than three years and has grown very popular, it is the first time it is being held in Zimbabwe.

“The tournament worked towards promoting the game of football in Zimbabwe particularly amongst our clients and we have no doubt that Dairibord Zimbabwe will represent Zimbabwe to the best of their ability in the regional tournament in Zambia.

“The teams that will make it to Anfield will receive a professional training session with Liverpool FC legends and coaches to help them prepare for the final tournament.  The winning team will receive the Standard Chartered Trophy.”
