Davis Cup team in Mutare

MUTARE - The Zimbabwe Davis Cup team will today conduct a tennis coaching clinic for Mantas Tennis Academy during its 2014 Annual Tennis Awards at Mutare Girls High.

Zimbabwe's United States-based number one player Takanyi Garanganga, Turkey-based number two Mark Finn and fourth-placed Spain-based Tinotenda Chanakira will conduct the coaching clinic.

Former Zimbabwe Davis Cup Captain and Mantas Tennis Academy coach Freeman Nyamunokora told the Daily News the trio will be the star attraction at the function.

"The Davis Cup team will administer the awards for our outstanding players from Under-10s to Under-18s before conducting a coaching clinic for our players," Nyamunokora said.

He said this should help motivate his young players as they will get a chance to mix and mingle with their idols.

"This is a chance for our players to interact with the country's best tennis players and learn from them," he said.

Mantas Tennis Academy was formed by former Tennis Zimbabwe president Anne Martin and it has been a cradle of local tennis for decades.

It has produced former Davis Cup players Genius Chidzikwe and Pfungwa Mahefu.

Currently, its flag is being flown high by Region 5 Youth Games gold medallist Ronzai Saurombe and many other junior players.

Nyamunokora said fellow Davis Cup players Benjamin Lock and doubles player Wayne Black, who is coming out of retirement had not confirmed their participation but might still turn up.

The team is currently preparing for their 2015 Davis Cup Euro-Africa Zone Group II encounter against Bosnia-Herzegovina set to start this coming Friday.

Earlier this week, Bosnia Herzegovina announced their squad for this tie which consists of Nerman Fati, Damir Dzumhur, Tomislav Brkic and Mirza Basic.
