Miss Zimbabwe finals date moved

HARARE - The Miss Zimbabwe finals which had been scheduled for April 25 will now be held on May 2 to pave way for the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF).

The national pageant’s communications and programmes manager, Tendai Chirau said dates for the beauty contest which will be run under  the theme “Probity” had been shifted because they had initially overlooked the business calendar.

“The set date clashes with ZITF which is one of the biggest events in the business calendar of the country. Some of the corporates who are meant to come to the finals will be at the ZITF so we do not want to create unnecessary pressure, we just moved it by a week so there is nothing odd about moving the dates,” he said.

This year’s contest incorporated entries from the Diaspora, giving all Zimbabweans a chance to participate in the national event.

“After the finals last year, there were several enquiries from the Zimbabwean Diaspora community who wanted to enter the competition.

“So we have given them a platform on our website, they just fill in the forms and if they meet the criteria, they will be called for the boot camp. But please note that they will pay for their own air tickets,” he said.

The Miss Zimbabwe Trust has since selected 32 girls from Bulawayo who will be in the boot camp scheduled for April this year following an overwhelming response to auditions held in the City of Kings at the weekend.

Trust chairperson, Mary Chiwenga added they were changing things for the better, but would not slash ticket prices. Last year’s tickets were pegged from $300 per head.

“We said it last year that we were going commercial and nothing has changed. In fact, we have started getting inquiries about the sales and we will let people know when they go on sale.

“The prices remain the same, and the judges will still be high-profile CEOs, lawyers, ambassadors and others.

“The judges will be announced in the Miss Zimbabwe magazine that will come out towards the finals,” she said.

In Masvingo, they selected four girls. In Mutare and Marondera three and four girls were selected respectively. Auditions are yet to be conducted in Harare, Chitungwiza and Chinhoyi.

They are looking for girls who are 1.71 metres tall, who have never been married and do not have children.

Miss World Zimbabwe pageant will run under the theme “Probity”.
