Tocky Vibes hogs Nama limelight

HARARE - Rising Zimdancehall musician Tocky Vibes picked two awards out of a possible three at the 14th edition of the National Arts Merit Awards (Nama) held at 7 Arts on Saturday night.

The 21-year-old musician’s hit album Mhai Singles Collection won the Outstanding Album Award in a category that also featured Jah Prayzah’s Kumbumura Mhute and Suluman Chimbetu’s Gunship.

Tocky Vibes also prevailed in the Outstanding Song Category where his smash hit Mhai proved too strong for Kumbumura Mhute and Killer T’s Tirikumhanya.

Despite collecting two awards on the night, the Rugare-born singer was beaten in the Outstanding Male Musician gong by Suluman Chimbetu who has been a regular winner at the Namas in the past three editions of the event.

While Tocky Vibes was the most dominant individual artist at the just-ended Nama, the arts group with the most awards was Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo whose theatrical production Umbiko KaMadlenya collected the Outstanding Actor, Outstanding Actress, Outstanding Director  and the Outstanding Theatrical Production Awards.

The Saturday night event was one to forget for music star Jah Prayzah who walked away empty-handed despite being nominated in the Outstanding Song and Outstanding Album Award categories. Last year the Tsviriyo singer was the biggest Nama winner with an astonishing four-gong haul.

The 14th edition of Nama also saw Gweru-based sculptor Forbes Mushipe’s bid to win four consecutive Outstanding Mix Media Category awards go up in smoke after he lost to Rizimu Chiwawa.

In what was indeed a forgettable night for Mushipe, he also lost to Rufaro Murenza in 3 Dimensional Work category.

Other notable winners on the night were trailblazing Zimbabwean comedian Carl Joshua Ncube who walked away with the Arts Personality of the Year award and fellow comedian Uncle Ritchie who grabbed the People’s Choice Award.

Cynthia Mare, who scooped three Zimbabwe Music Awards in October last year, walked away with the Nama Outstanding Female musician Award where she saw off the challenges of Cindy Munyavi and Agatha Murudzwa.

As has become the norm, music superstar Oliver Mtukudzi once again claimed the Life Achievement Award.
