Sulu lights up Masvingo

MASVINGO - By the end of his Friday night concert at Ritz Night Club, Suluman Chimbetu had been christened “Chibaba chenyuchi” in line with the chant by Soul Jah Love on the dendera star’s song Nyuchi.

So popular was the song that Sulu was forced by popular demand to play it several times during the five-hour concert in Zimbabwe’s oldest town.

The bumper crowd was particularly impressed by the way the award-winning musician ably mimicked Soul Jah Love.

From a distance one would have been excused for believing that indeed the Zimdancehall star artiste was on stage with Sulu.

Judging from the Masvingo concert, the track Nyuchi off Sulu’s latest album Gunship appears to have taken over from Sean Timba as the new anthem at the award-wining musician’s concert.

After a slow start, Gunship is suddenly winning the hearts of music fans across the length and breadth of the country.

Despite the obvious popularity of the new songs, there was still a sizable part of the crowd that continually requested old hits by the musician’s late father Simon ‘Chopper’ Chimbetu.

The most popular of Chopper’s songs on the night was Ndarangarira Gamba which was played several times on the night.

The music fans sang along as Sulu belted out the old hit.

With the sungura kingpin Alick Macheso set to play at the same venue this coming weekend, Masvingo music fans are looking forward to a rare fortnight of top class entertainment.
