Masunga wins Julius Robinson Trophy

HARARE - Tonderayi Masunga shot a one-under-par 143 to be crowned champion of the annual Julius Robinson Trophy at Wingate Golf Club at the weekend.

Playing off a handicap of 1, Masunda thrust himself in the driver’s seat of the 36-hole tournament with a fiery start that saw him sign for a first round four-under-par 68.

However, his second round 75 left a lot to be desired but the chasing pack of Jack Allard, Stuart Krog and Tembelani Vundla failed to capitalise on his slip-up.

Allard, Krog and Vundla finished second, third and fourth respectively following below par performances that belie their pedigree.

Allard finished on level-par 144 following rounds of 71 and 73 whilst Krog, who led the Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association order of merit last year finished on three-over-par 147.

Playing off scratch, Krog got himself into trouble with a wayward first round 75 before firing a final round 72.

Vundla, who came into the tournament leading the ZJGA order of merit, finished five shots off the pace on four-over-par 148 following rounds of 71 and 77.

Apart from earning points for the ZJGA order of merit the tournament which fielded 91 junior golfers, the tournament also provided a platform for selectors to choose a team for the 2015 Africa Zone Six Championship.
