Cairns places 66 at Victorian Open

HARARE - Ryan Cairns fired a final round 72 yesterday to finish 66th at the Oates Victorian Open at the Thirteenth Beach Golf Links, in Australia.

Cairns finished with a gross score of 10-over-par 298 following rounds of 69, 72, 85 and 72.

The 30-year-old Zimbabwean was 26 strokes behind eventual winner Richard Green of Australia, who won a second playoff hole, edging out fellow left-hander Nick Cullen in the duel of the Masters.

Green completed his first Open title after carding rounds of 66 72 67 and 67 for a total 16 under par 272.

As for Cairns, he will hope his experience at the Australia PGA Tour event will spur him on going into the start of the 2015 Sunshine Tour Schedule this month.

Cairns will return to South Africa for the Joburg Open at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club from February 26 to March 1.

Meanwhile the Open title win for Green came with more than he had bargained for.

Whilst Green won the Oates Victorian Open, his Norwegian fiancee Marianne Skarpnord triumphed in the women’s event an hour earlier.

Skarpnord won a head-to-head battle with Victorian teenager Su Oh by three shots.

The couple made golf history by winning the men's and women's titles at the Victoria Open on the same course on the same day.

“I really think it’s fascinating that we’ve both done it. It’s great for the tournament,” Green told Australian media.

“The format of this tournament is amazing and I really hope it kicks off some interest in other tournaments around the world because it’s a great atmosphere. Having the girls around, they’re great players and they create just as good an environment.”
