Zim complete unofficial warm-ups clean-sweep

HARARE - Half centuries by Stuart Matsikinyeri and Craig Ervine guided Zimbabwe to a 11-run win over Northern Districts XI yesterday, the African side’s third win over the New Zealand domestic side in preparation for the upcoming World Cup.

Batting first, Zimbabwe reached 301-7 without the pair of Hamilton Masakadza and Brendan Taylor, who were both rested.

Coming in at number five and six, Matsikinyeri (53) and Ervine (58) took charge of the Zimbabwe innings and set the platform for a competitive total in Gisborne.

They were ably complemented by Sean Williams (46) and Regis Chakabva (42) before big-hitting Solomon Mire struck an unbeaten 39 from 23 balls.

In response, regular fall of wickets denied the New Zealanders any kind of momentum.

At some point the hosts were 105-5 in the 24th over and threatened to come back into the game with superb batting display from Brett Hampton, who struck a century of 114 from 54 balls.

But Zimbabwe held on to the end.

Tendai Chatara was the pick of the Zimbabwe bowlers with figures of 3-37.

In the end it was an all-round performance with Chamu Chibhabha 2-20, Tawanda Mupariwa 2-49 and Elton Chigumbura 2-61 all contributing with the ball to bowl out Districts for 290.

After the Gisborne match, Zimbabwe will play two official warm-up matches against New Zealand and Sri Lanka on February 9 and 11 respectively.

Zim line-up: Sikandar Butt, Chamu Chibhabha, Stuart Matsikinyeri, Sean Williams, Craig Ervine, Elton Chigumbura (c), Solomon Mire, Tawanda Mupariwa, Tendai Chatara, Prosper Utseya, Regis Chakabva.
