Fokorani targets Two Oceans

HARARE - Zimbabwe's leading long distance runner Mike Fokoroni will be satisfied with a top three finish at the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon whose entries closed yesterday.

Fokoroni is one of a number of Zimbabwean athletes taking part at the annual 46th ultra-marathon that will take place on Easter Saturday in Cape Town.

The Olympian was Zimbabwe’s best placed male runner at last year’s event, finishing 14th in the main race after stopping the clock in 3 hours 19 minutes and 51 seconds.

“I am aiming higher for both the Two Oceans and Comrades. My aim is to win gold in both events,” he said.

“That’s my burning target for this year.”

The unassuming long striding athlete has participated in a number of marathons all over the world in countries including North Korea, Japan, South Africa, China among others.

And at 38, he is not showing signs of slowing down.

“Last year I was very fit for Comrades, only that am not good at down run, that’s why I am confident this year I will do better because it’s up run,” he added.

“Normally I do my training in Bindura because the terrain n roads are good. There is also the issue of safety. I really feel safe. I can wake up at 2am no fear,” he said.

According to the Two Oceans Marathon website, the entries for the 2015 Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon closed yesterday with the limit of 11 000 having been reached.

“The good news for runners who failed to secure an entry, is that the substitution entry process for the Ultra Marathon have now officially opened,” read a statement on the Two Oceans Marathon website.

“The substitution entry process provides runners who can no longer participate, the opportunity to ‘hand over’ their entry to another runner.”
