Manyuchi will get his request: Kanengoni-Malinga

HARARE - Deputy Sports Minister Tabetha Kanengoni-Malinga revealed arrangements are still being made for the World Boxing Championship (WBC) and African Welterweight champion, Charles Manyuchi, to meet President Robert Mugabe.

Manyuchi had requested to meet with the president after he defended his World Boxing Council international welterweight last year after beating Devis Caceres of Colombia but it appeared to have fallen on deaf ears.

But yesterday Kanengoni-Malinga said the country will not shun their athletes and needed to show its appreciation for Manyuchi’s achievements by granting him his wish to meet to meet the country’s Head of State.

“Manyuchi, last year we were trying to meet him on several occasions but because of the Youth Games, the minster kept on postponing and he probably felt we were neglecting him but we are going to make sure that Manyuchi gets his request,” she said.

“He requested to go and meet with the president and come to our offices and he definitely deserves recognition because he has made us proud.

“I congratulate him for his endorsement that he got recently. We are not in the business of abandoning our athletes. This year it’s going to be a different focus, we want to try our best to pay attention to as many our athletes as we can and try and harness as much sponsorship as we can.”
