Zanu PF mulls Mutare diamond cutting centre

MUTARE - President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF party wants to set up a diamond cutting and polishing centre in Mutare in a bid to become the main supplier of finished diamonds to the world, a senior official has said.

Samuel Undenge, the Manicaland Zanu PF acting provincial chairperson, said the ruling party is establishing a diamond polishing and cutting centre whose holding company is in the process of being registered.

Mutare City Council was in the process of securing a site for the project, Undenge told a provincial coordination committee meeting at Mutare Polytechnic on Monday.

“As a party, we have decided to have a diamond cutting and polishing centre,” Undenge said.

“As Zanu PF, we are forming a company which we are in the process of registering…I believe as Zanu PF, we should generate our own income. We are already in the process of identifying suitable sites for the two projects with the help of our town clerk.”

He also revealed that the ruling party was working on a huge real estate investment which will house their provincial offices and have hostel facilities.

Undenge said the new investment drive was necessitated by dwindling income.

“We now have donor fatigue,” he said.

Zimbabwe already has a $200 million diamond and cutting facility in Mt Hampden in Harare — the privately-owned Zimbabwe Diamond Technology Centre run by Lovemore Kurotwi  — who has had fierce run-ins with the ruling party over a diamond concession in Chiadzwa.

Kurotwi’s centre, which is nearing completion, houses all diamond associates ranging from miners, diamond dealers, cutters and polishers, jewellers, financial institutions and government regulatory authorities.

Zimbabwe charges $100 000 in annual licence fees for diamond cutting and polishing, a fee industry experts contend is  too high while the licence tenure is too short to attract investors.

How is this news? this is the same as Walter Mzembi's dream of world cup in Zim in 2034 or Disney land in Victoria falls. All pipe dreams...every year they are mulling this and the other and nothing ever materialises. The only thing definate is money for treatment in Singapore and endless overseas visits.

While it's a good thing that they are spear heading this project which should benefit the country through value addition, such policies should be spear headed by the government, not the ruling party. There's a real thick line between the ruling party and the government which is conveniently totally disregarded in this country. This venture therefore is a counter measure to the other soon to be successfully run diamond polishing center in Mt.Hampden and also a clear way to loot diamonds straight into their pockets via Zanu PF.
