Cara through to quarter-finals

HARARE - Cara Black and her Colombian partner yesterday progressed to the Australian Open mixed doubles quarter-finals after a hard fought second round win.

Flanked by Juan Cabal of Colombia, Zimbabwean Black dismissed Sweden’s Robert Lindstedt and Lisa Raymond of the United States 6-4, 5(14) - 7 (12).

The pair will meet either the duo of Kristina Mladenovic of France and Daniel Nestor of Canada or that of Florin Mergea and Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands, who were still playing their second round match at the time of going to print yesterday.

If the number five seeds overcome that hurdle they could face the India’s Sania Mirza and Brazilian Bruno Soares in the semifinals.

Mirza was Black’s partner last year.

The mixed doubles section is Black’s only remaining competition having bowed out of her favoured doubles section of the tournament last week.

Black and her playing partner Saisai Zheng from China crashed out in the first round of the Australian Open women’s doubles event, suffering a shock straight-set defeat at the hands of Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Alicja Rosolska from Poland.
