Triathletes jostle for SA Champs selection

HARARE - Zimbabwean triathletes will get a final chance to impress selectors ahead of selection for the South Africa National Championships in March.

The SA Championships have been slotted for the first week of March in East London and athletes will be highly motivated when the final round of selection takes place in a fortnight at Mt Pleasant.

National team coach Wayne Davidson has tipped four juniors to make it into the team basing on the points they have amassed during the run up to final selection.

These are Drew Williams and Gideon Benade in the junior boys’ section alongside junior girls Gabrielle De Chassart and Skye Davidson.

“All the guys are in perfect condition, we were derailed a little with the school exams last year but they have shown excellent zeal and commitment in training and point-races they have been competing in,” Davidson told the Daily News yesterday.

Zimbabwe will field Under-16 and Under-19 sides at the South African event. While Davidson expressed satisfaction with his charges, he was pessimistic of a top podium finish.

“We will certainly get a couple of medals in South Africa but I doubt very much if we can win gold; we can manage silver and bronze though,” he said.

The team for May’s African Championships in Egypt is set to be selected based on performances from South Africa.
