Raza ton propels Eagles to second place

HARARE - Sikandar Raza Butt’s unbeaten 106 runs from 111 balls propelled Mashonaland Eagles to second position in the Pro 50 Championship with an eight-wicket win over log leaders Matabeleland Tuskers here yesterday.

The Eagles opening batsman was in a no-nonsense mood, hitting 13 boundaries and a six and his 142-run second wicket partnership with on-song batsman Chamu Chibhabha was all the host needed to win the match with 50 balls to spare.

Chibhabha was caught by John Nyumbu off the bowling of Chris Mpofu for 74 runs from 102 balls.

Tuskers batted first after winning the toss and were bowled out for 213 runs after 49.2 overs before Mash Eagles easily surpassed the target reaching 216-2 in 41.4 overs.

With the exception of Craig Ervine’s 124-ball 103 runs, the rest of the batsmen found the going tough at the crease. Ervine managed seven boundaries and a maximum before he was caught by substitute fielder Ryan Burl off Raza’s bowling.

Opening batsman Nkosana Mpofu contributed 24 runs while Richmond Mutumbami weighed in with 18 runs on a difficult outing on the crease.

Raza was the pick of Mash Eagles bowlers with four wickets for 33 runs from nine overs.

Seamer Trevor Garwe picked two wickets.

“I’m enjoying my game at the moment and wish to carry that form into the World Cup,” Raza told the Daily News after the match.

“I have been working hard and like I always say, I don’t compete with anyone but myself, if I can better my score in the next match that I get to play, the happier I will be. It’s a game of stats and I have to show that with each and every outing.”

Mashonaland Eagles welcomed Brendan Taylor into their side and the former Midwest Rhinos batsman made his presence felt when he held on to a catch to dismiss Tuskers’ last man, Chris Mpofu, for a duck. Mpofu was caught off the bowling of Eagles captain Greg Lamb.

At Mutare Sports Club, Rhinos defeated host Mountaineers by four wickets.

Mountaineers were bundled out for 175 runs in 45.5 overs while Rhinos totalled 179-6 in 42.2 overs.
