Bashed MDC supporters in court

HARARE - MDC supporters who were brutally assaulted by Zanu PF yobs allegedly led by the notorious chairperson of the ruling party’s Harare Province youth league, Godfrey Gomwe, were yesterday granted $100 bail each by a Mbare magistrate.

The pulverised MDC supporters were the ones who were arrested by police — leaving the opposition party and the Budiriro community, where the assault took place, shaken and perplexed.

Amos Mudondo, 32, Doesntmatter Mawana, 32, and Trust Muchena, 32, appeared before magistrate Anita Tshuma yesterday charged with public violence.

They were ordered to reside at their given addresses and not to interfere with witnesses as part of their bail conditions.

Mudondo, Mawana and Muchena are jointly charged with Malvin Tinarwo,32, who is already on remand over the same charges.

Through their lawyer Obey Shava, the trio complained that they were the ones who were assaulted by Zanu PF supporters, although a docket was opened against them.

The youths said the unprovoked violence against them led to three of them being hospitalised and six others being arrested. The attack happened on Sunday.

The MDC supporters were attacked by a Zanu PF mob during a party youth mobilisation and recruitment exercise in the Harare high density suburb.

They allege that Zanu PF youths actually ordered police to arrest the MDC youths despite the fact that Mudondo, Mawana and Muchena had visible wounds.

Prosecutor Fanuel Madanire alleges that on January 11, the quartet approached the complainant who was walking away from a Zanu PF office located near Budiriro Shopping Centre.

An argument reportedly ensued over why the Zanu PF supporters had set up their office at that location.

A brawl erupted and Muchena allegedly struck the complainant with an axe on his left hand, resulting in a deep cut, the court heard.

It is further alleged that Mudondo and his accomplices later met another Zanu PF supporter and ordered her to chant MDC slogans.

They reportedly assaulted her after she had refused to comply.

It is the State’s case that the complainant was hit on the shoulders before accused persons stamped on her chest causing injuries.

Clearly,ZRP is infested with ZANU PF activists. As long as violence is perpetrated against MDC T supporters by ZANU PF thugs the former will always get locked up for being attacked by the untouchables.ZRP professionals have long been removed.
