Zanu PF supporters bash MDC followers

HARARE - In an attack that has sparked fears of renewed inter-party political violence in Zimbabwe, MDC supporters were brutally assaulted at the weekend by Zanu PF yobs who were allegedly led by the notorious chairperson of the ruling party’s Harare Province youth league, Godfrey Gomwe.

And to add salt to their injury, the pulverised MDC supporters were the ones who were arrested by police — leaving the opposition party and the Budiriro community, where the assault took place, shaken and perplexed.

In a statement yesterday, the MDC said the unprovoked violence against its members, which led to three of its supporters being hospitalised and six others being arrested by the partisan police, occurred on Sunday after the supporters were attacked by a Zanu PF mob during a party youth mobilisation and recruitment exercise in the Harare high density suburb.

“It was in fact the victims who were arrested as the police once again showed their bias in the wake of the resurgence of Zanu PF violence.

“MDC Youth had recruited over 100 youths in Budiriro, who signed up to be a part of the party before Zanu PF thugs attacked the youth leaders with sticks, stones and iron bars.

“The rowdy Zanu PF youths, led by their Harare Province chairman Godfrey Gomwe attacked our youths for merely wearing the party regalia and carrying out visibility programmes in Budiriro. They ordered MDC youths to remove their T-shirts,” the party said in its statement.

The brutal attack led to Johanna Mamombe, the party’s Harare West district youth secretary; Benard Ncube, Harare West district chairperson; and Tangai Magawa, Hatfield district youth chairperson being hospitalised — while Trust Muchena, the Glen Norah youth organising secretary was kidnapped by the Zanu PF yobs before they surrendered him at Budiriro 2 police station, together with five other party members.

MDC national youth provincial chairperson, Stan Manyenga, attracted the ire of the police for rescuing Mamombe and Ncube, before taking them to a local hospital.

Police officers from the Law and Order section went to his home yesterday afternoon intending to arrest him.

“The MDC is concerned that violence continues to rear its ugly head in our society where focus should be on reviving the economy and creating jobs for the youths. We call upon the police to execute its mandate without fear or favour.

“Zanu PF has not changed and violence continues to be part of their DNA. We urge the police to arrest the real perpetrators of violence and to release our innocent members immediately,” the party continued in its statement.

This is not the first time that the controversial Gomwe, a fanatic follower of quarrelsome First Lady Grace Mugabe has been mired in violence and other nefarious activities.

Jim Kunaka, the former Zanu PF youth chairperson for Harare and a prominent supporter of embattled former Vice President Joice Mujuru was kidnapped late last year, savagely battered and left for dead by hardline ruling party thugs, allegedly including Gomwe.

This orgy of violence within the ruling party, which occurred ahead of its damp squib “elective” congress last month, played out as gunshots were also fired in the populous suburb of Mbare in Harare, as Zanu PF’s escalating factional and succession wars reached a climax that many feared could descend into a bloodbath.

The violence occurred when six gun-toting men kidnapped the hapless Kunaka, manhandled him and took him to a secluded place near

Chitungwiza where they bludgeoned him to a pulp.

Speaking to the Daily News with difficulty, from his private clinic bed in Harare, Kunaka fingered his arch-nemesis, Gomwe, as the alleged mastermind of the attack, although Gomwe strenuously denied the allegations.

But Kunaka insisted that he had little doubt that Gomwe was behind his abduction and assault because he (Gomwe) had allegedly failed to make political headway in Mbare.

And only recently, Zanu PF Harare youths, allegedly led by Gomwe, were accused of extorting up to $3 000 per day from Harare commuter omnibus

(Kombi) drivers as guarantee for their protection.

Moses Mutyasira secretary-general of the Indigenous Commuter Operators Association said the party thugs had invaded Market Square,

Copacabana, Rezende and Fourth Street bus termini, demanding $1 from every commuter bus driver for every trip.

“We are now being forced to pay these touts who are claiming to be Zanu PF youths, working under instruction from their leader Gomwe.

“They are also claiming that they have the blessing of the First Lady Grace Mugabe who has also approved that they can do so as part of their empowerment programme,” Mutyasira said.

However, Gomwe denied that he was behind the criminal acts that were being perpetrated by the party youths.

What is surprising here is that these MDC idiots are surprised the violence is back when it was MDC who failed to implement the reforms that would have stopped the violence! How stupid is that!
