Fuz hosts training camp for players

HARARE - The Footballers’ Union of Zimbabwe (Fuz) will next week hold a training camp for all out-of-contract players to help them find new clubs ahead of the 2015 season.

It will start next week Wednesday at the National Sports Stadium and the players will be working with selected local coaches to regain their fitness levels during the first three days.

On Saturday, the players will then be divided into two teams and will play a practice match which will be open to club representatives and scouts.

“We have noticed that when players contracts run out it’s either they approach a club to seek employment, making it difficult to negotiate their contracts,” Fuz secretary-general Paul Gundani told the Daily News yesterday.

“As a strategy of the union to assist player, we thought we should come up with a training camp for three days. On the fourth day there will be a match involving the players without contracts.

“We will invite all clubs and their representatives to come watch the players and where they feel there is a player they require they can begin the negotiations for a contract.”

Gundani said Fuz is targeting to accommodate at least 40 players.

Fuz will hold a second training camp in Bulawayo for the Southern Region-based players during the 2015 mid-season break.

“What we have done is that we have approached our friends who have agreed to support us financially during this programme,” said Gundani.

“We will start the project with the Northern Region this time around and during the mid-season transfer window we will also take the project to Bulawayo to cater for the Southern Region.”

Fuz has been on a warpath with local clubs in recent years, fighting for the rights of players, who have been largely marginalised.

Last year, the union successfully appealed to the Labour Court to get outstanding payments owed to several local players by clubs.
