'Zanu PF bigwigs want Mugabe out'

HARARE - Analysts say Zanu PF’s continuing infighting, and growing speculation inside the party around the possibility of President Robert Mugabe relinquishing the reins of power before the end of his current term betrayed the fact that many ruling party bigwigs were now desperate for the nonagenarian to leave office.

At the same time, there was almost 100 percent agreement among the analysts who spoke to the Daily News yesterday that it would be “nothing short of a miracle” if Mugabe willingly handed over complete power to one of his lieutenants anytime soon.

These sentiments came amid the political storm ignited by fraud-accused businessman and prominent Zanu PF member Energy Mutodi, who sensationally claimed on social media at the weekend that Vice

President Emmerson Mnangagwa would succeed Mugabe by March.

Rather disappointingly, the musician-cum-politician did not say how his cryptic New Year wishes would come true.

Psychology Maziwisa, the junior Zanu PF spokesperson said: “Why don’t you call Cde Khaya Moyo.”

Zanu PF spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo’s mobile was continually engaged.

Analyst Shepherd Mntungwa said yesterday, there appeared to be “a growing sentiment within the party that perhaps it is time president

Mugabe handed over the reins of power to one of his lieutenants”.

“Events of the past few months, including the vicious succession wars, also suggest that this sentiment cuts across the major factional lines in the party, with the only issue being who should take over from president Mugabe — hence the brutal purging of (former Vice President Joice) Mujuru and her allies.

“But we must not confuse the fact that many Zanu PF bigwigs want Mugabe to go, even if they won’t climb Mount Everest to say so, with Mugabe actually going.

“My own reading is that president Mugabe has no immediate plans to go anytime soon. In addition, (First Lady) Grace’s starring role in the purges of last year suggest an inert fear within the family about any possible political changes within Zanu PF’s power matrices,” Mntungwa said.

Piers Pigou, southern African director of the International Crisis

Group, said it was likely that speculation around Mugabe’s imminent departure and Mnangagwa taking over would escalate within Zanu PF, even as some senior party apparatchiks tried to argue, unconvincingly, that “succession was a non-issue”.

“But unless there has been a significant and rapid deterioration in his (Mugabe’s) health, it would make little sense for him to pull out ... but the possibility of running out of steam is ever present given his age.

“But does stepping back have to be an ‘all or nothing’ affair. This seems highly unlikely. It may well be that Mugabe pulls further back and gives his VPs more room to run a range of issues around governing the country and dealing with party issues.

“This would also allow him to focus on his regional and continental roles as Sadc and AU chair, and also to retain a position ‘above’ the ongoing machinations within the party,” he said.

Mugabe took over from Malawi’s Peter Mutharika as Sadc chairman in August last year, after the regional bloc controversially endorsed the outcome of Zimbabwe’s disputed 2013 elections.

The African Union will be conferring a similar honour on Mugabe this year, with the analysts saying regional and continental leaders were in a way also suggesting that these honorary positions were some sort of “golden handshake or farewell incentive” for him to hand over power in Zimbabwe.

And even though Mutodi also postulated that Grace would become VP when Mnangagwa succeeds Mugabe, Pigou said: “I suspect his (Mugabe’s) presence will be required to help shore up and consolidate her options too.

“Her political cachet will be more coherently developed if Mugabe remains politically active, albeit in a reduced role”.

Pigou also said with the criticism directed at Mugabe growing within Zanu PF — as Zimbabwe faced one of its worst ever liquidity crunches, increased power blackouts, rising violent crime, and worsening public sector corruption among a cocktail of other problems — it would make “perfect sense” for Mugabe to step back at this point.

Political analyst Takura Zhangazha also said a Mnangagwa take-over was unlikely to occur anytime soon, except if this was orchestrated by Mugabe himself.

He added that it was “too soon for Mnangagwa to have consolidated his own power base,” outside Mugabe to force his way to the top.

But other analysts said with Mugabe plagued by ill-health associated with advanced age, which had seen him shuttle between Zimbabwe and Singapore for medical attention in recent years, even he realised that he could not continue as leader forever.

Stephen Chan, a professor of world politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, said rumours of Mugabe’s health have abounded, but said he seemed sometimes confused both during and after the party congress.

“If the issues are indeed health-related, it would be good to stand down at this point and concentrate on his Sadc and AU ceremonial duties — which I have always considered to be valedictory in his case,” Chan said.

Mugabe is the only leader Zimbabweans have known since the country’s independence in 1980, after first working as prime minister until 1987, and then becoming executive president from then until today.

Just about every Zimbabwean wants Mugabe out. To be honest as the 'face' of Zimbabwe he is very bad news. I wish him no harm only that he either does not return from Singapore or comes home to apologise to an entire devastated nation and graciously step down. He is extremely bad for morale and for business. ZPF needs their heads read!

Mnangagwa taking over from Mugabe? Utter nonsense. The only time anyone will take over from Mugabe is when a medical doctor has certified that Robert G Mugabe is clinically dead not when his heart is still beating. Never. Even when Mugabe is bed-ridden he will still be in charge. Even when he finally dies his death will be kept a secret while those closest to him decide how to announce his death and who will take over with the army on high alert. The moment Mugabe dies then everything will kick off. Will it be Zhuwao who will officially announce the death of his uncle on radio and television? Mugabe's one and only love is leadership, and his family comes a distant second. I laugh when I read this idiotic reports that Mnangagwa is going to take over soon. Not when Zhuwao and Jonathan Moyo are around. Mutsvangwa is also waiting in the wings. Mnangagwa has to overcome Zhuwao and Jonathan but there is also Mutsvangwa who is eyeing the top position. Jonathan is Ndebele and unelected which are two big disadvantages. Zhuwao's case is weak - related to Mugabe. Once Mugabe goes Zhuwao will be a nobody.

There is a vain attempt to present VP Munangagwa as a power hungry ruthless individual which is not so. His Excellency selected individuals he trusted, individuals he knew had the the capacity to come up with ideas to help him turn around the fortunes of this nation. As a nation we need to give the new status quo a chance to prove themselves. Those who think can do better than the new team should wait for 2018 to come. They should participate in elections representing a party of their own choice and hope to win and then get appointed to positions of influence and then prove themselves. In my opinion ZANU PF is very much in control of its internal processes. The party's future appears to be bright and secure. Mind you VP Munangagwa and His Excellency have known each other since the early sixties and have been working together since mid seventies. They know each other well and are aware of subversive elements trying in vain to wage a rift between themselves. They are also more than aware that the agenda is a tired one sponsored by clueless foreigners. Fellow Zimbabweans,God alone an noints and appoints the leadership of this mighty nation. Was it not so our detractors would have imposed their will on us along time ago like they did with Patrice Lumumba,Gaddafi and many others. God's hand is on this nation. The Almighty has a succession plan for this nation. In the mean time lets rally behind his choice.

We can quote any analysts we like, even from the moon but the bottom line remains that Mugabe is still there & arikutitsikirira zvakapetwa. Am just seek of this never ending story! Asi chii?

Mujombo - 6 January 2015

The odds against Mnangagwa becoming the next President are almost nil. All it takes is Mugabe making the statement to silence everybody. Just like Mugabe, he has the backing of most of the army Generals, War veterans and Collaborators and a big chunk of the business community. Jonathan Moyo and Zhuwao are just loud mouths whose very existence in the whole political matrix is hanging by the thread as we speak. Ten Provincial Chairpersons had to be dismissed at one time for hatching a plan to overthrow Mugabe and effect a regime change remember, and they all were Mnangagwa's henchmen.

Dr Know - 6 January 2015

The original plan was for Mnangagwa to take over the reigns smoothly. Mugabe upon his arrival back from his holiday in the Far East was to make an announcement in February on his Birthday message to the nation that he is going on retirement. The dust being raised now by the likes of Jonathan Moyo and Zhuwao wasn't part of the original plan, nobody had seen it coming and so for now we might have to be stuck with Mugabe until the dust settles.

Dr Know - 6 January 2015

@pio maketo >>Good try from Mnangagwa's surrogate. But you won't fool us here because Mnangagwa himself told the whole world that he is a trained killer and administered controversial operations in Matebeleland and Midlands. He, together with his boss has been at the centre of power struggles and eliminations which have seen countless liberation luminaries liquidated, intimidated into silence or otherwise demised. Everyone is aware of many efforts to somewhat improve his image but unfortunately it is an uphill because many Zimbabweans haven't forgotten all what the VP stood for in no distant past. You cannot tell me that a party which fires its central figures in the magnitude we saw in the last months is at peace with itself. You cannot tell us that all the suspicions within the party are just nothings. Clearly, all those stage-managed attempted assassinations are a sign of fear-of-the-unknown and political temperature readings. Yes, 2018 elections will come but I am not a novice to Zimbabwean elections and expect NOTHING positive out of any of those Zanu-manufactured processes. The problem is that Zanu and Mugabe think they are bigger than Zimbabwe. Try again.

I smell a rat there is something fish here this Mutodi has all the info of what is going on but bcoz his hart leaks like a sieve he failed to keep it secret although he just scratched on top and never went deeper . Mugabe did not give a ministerial post to his wife up now why? Why jumping and running around in jubilation BY Munangagwa after being appointed vp . The first to do so after many vp have been appointed and that sends a message that his appointment is very different from the past ones as his is taking over one not confined to number 2 . Remember how grace showered him with praises and those praises were not for no reason and Grace herself is going or is forcing Mugabe to step down and at his age he can not withstand woman power at home and in bedroom in particular. lets keep our fingers crossed .On another note i do not see this country remaining intact in next 30yrs if the belief that people from mat can not be presidents in this country ..

To dream of mugabe reliqiushing power is like building an upstair to reach the sun. How many deputies did he have so far? Recently he relieved mujuru for poor performance& other various issues instigated by his sweet 16 forgetting to fire himself. Once that old bones goes 6 feet under , the likes of mutasa, mujuru, gumbo will bounce back to the dying party. All these mafikizolos will be hard hit not mentioning the gushungo diaries. Everything will be unearthed. That will be the death of the riches of mpofu , chombo(they will never rise). Look at mobutu , banda etc! If was the man could rule from from his grave but unfortunately he will meet the Most High to judge him, big fire is waiting fo him. Zvawakaba zvese ita mbuya ykuenda nayo becoz everything will given to the rightful people. Mark my words!!! Gire ukawana mari ye wig undibate ruoko.

(GIFT PHIRI, NEWS EDITOR) Which leader would like an unconstitutional coup, look at Elton Mangoma, Tendai Biti, Welshman Ncube, Julius Malema, Guy Scot Etc. You fire or demote them, so it does not mean there is a chorus for the President to go coz Mujuru was demoted. Mutodi is simply painting ED as the most ruthless power hungry politician in order to create chaos in ZANU(PF). Your analyst have always said the same sentiments for the past 10 years and are openly known as pro MDC-T supporters western funded, what more can they for their next disbursement tranche? be real.

Prosper Chinamhora - 7 January 2015

Remember Energy Mutodi is a political prostitute. This guy was booted out from Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn by Simba Makoni. Besides he is also a fraudster. Thank you Simba Makoni for exposing such people as Energy Mutodi. Zanu pf claims Mujuru was expelled for engaging in corrupt activities. So why does the same party keep people like Energy Mutodi within its party ranks. We are not fools Zanu Pf. Jonathan Moyo and Patrick Zhuwawo act on this one, so we see how open you really are.

ecobee - 7 January 2015

Mugabe has gone past the retirement age. At 90+years the frail mugabe is now in a "natural death zone". Mugabe will never give anyone power on a silver platter wether within zanu pf or outside it. Mugabe cannot afford to go into retirement home and look back through the window to see the utter trail of distruction and pile of rubble he has made zimbabwe to be. Mugabe is a full blown Mafia boss with zanu pf as his Clan. Zanu pf will die a spectacular natural death when mugabe dies. One thing certain zimbabwe will not go to the grave with mugabe. ED will never be democratically elected at national polls to be president. His chances are virtually none to say the least. If Mugabe dies ED is finished too. A Mafia clan does not have a successor. It have "ONLY" one life span. 1st ED must be elected by zanu pf as its leader 2nd He must be elected as presidential candidate 3rd Must be elected at national polls. As soon as mugabe kicks the bucket the corrupt mujuru and her lot will re-surface for the final no holds barred open confrontation within zanu pf. When that time comes it will be not one way traffic as we saw grace doing. Grace will be on the receiving end for the 1st time. The funny thing is noone will win these zanu pf wars. Zanu will be left in shreds and pieces. Democratic forces must reject corrupt zanu pf groups seeking alliances when that time comes and its its coming.

Mugabe Is 'Truly Dying', Tsvangirai Taking Over Zimbabwe, Kenyan Prophet Insists A Kenyan prophet, Maxillar Mumo who on the 30th July predicted that Robert Mugabe is going to die soon after elections and Morgan Tsvangirai will take over from him, has insisted the MDC leader will still swiftly take over from Mugabe anytime from today. This came as the 2013 year end fast encroached and Zimbabwean's far and wide were regurgitating his previous prediction: “Tell Zimbabwe that the Lord says their President Mugabe is due to die soon after elections and that Morgan Tsvangirai is anointed of God to lead the nation…” - See more at: http://www.zimeye.com/tsvangirai-is-swiftly-taking-over-from-mugabe-kenyan-prophet-insists/#sthash.aYbrgsbu.dpuf
