Zhakata, Mutodi top Zim charts

HARARE - Zora star Leonard Zhakata’s songs Dhonza Makomborero and Dollar Boy respectively claimed first and second position in this year’s Coca-Cola Radio Zimbabwe Top 50.

The two winning songs are from Zhakata’s latest seven-track album Zvangu Zvaita. The Zora singer, who last dominated music charts in similar fashion in the mid-1994 when he released the blockbuster album Maruva Enyika,  shot to the top of the Radio Zimbabwe charts with his first gospel track ever.

Interestingly, in Dhonza Makomborero, Zhakata, a member of the United Family International Church (UFIC) led by Emmanuel Makandiwa sings:

Ndaisichemera nyasha

Nhasi chiso chinoyera chandiringa

Ruvoko runoyera rwatambanuka

Ndinoreva ruvoko runopukuta misodzi.

Award-winning Jah Prayzah’s songs Kumbumura Mhute and Makanika, off his latest album Kumbumura Mhute came third and fourth respectively.

In another remarkable return to the top, gospel songstress Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave came fifth with the track Gore Rapera that featured Jah Prayzah.

Meanwhile, the number one position in this year’s National FM Top 50 went to controversial musician-cum-politician Energy Mutodi whose song Runyararo got the highest number of votes from that station’s listeners.

The victory by the burly Mutodi, who criticised the Radio Zimbabwe charts two years ago for allegedly favouring Jah Prayzah, is likely to be a huge talking point.

It will be interesting to hear from Mutodi if his victory in this year’s edition would make him change his opinion on the perceived lack of fairness in local music charts.

Another outstanding musician in the National FM Top 50 was relatively unknown Magreen Chareka and the Kiya Boys with their song Gadziriro while youthful Tocky Vibes got third position for the very popular song Mhai. Given the popularity enjoyed by Tocky Vibes, many expected Mhai to earn a much higher position on both the National FM Top 50 and the Coca-Cola Radio Zimbabwe Top 50.
