Sulu mesmerises Byo

BULAWAYO - Dendera star Suluman Chimbetu officially unveiled his latest album “Gunship” at Club Forty Forty in Zimbabwe’s second largest city on Friday night.

Though the 10-track album, first launched in the capital end of November, has attracted mixed reactions across the country, Bulawayo fans seemed satisfied with the quality of the new offering judging from their response during the launch performance.

There was endless debate, though, throughout the concert on whether any track on “Gunship” can match Sean Timba, off his previous album Syllabus which almost became a ‘national anthem’

Sulu spent the better part of the show playing his new songs but the tracks “Phone” and “Nyuchi” in which he features Sungura musician Somandla Ndebele and dancehall chanter Soul Jah Love respectively appeared to be the fans’ favourites.

At one point, Sulu who is now popularly known as “Captain Sulu” had to temporarily spot fake dreadlocks as he mimicked Soul Jah Love on the track “Nyuchi.” Fans were clearly impressed by the stunt and kept on clamouring for encores of the song.

The Bulawayo launch of “Gunship” is part of a nationwide tour the dendera artiste is undertaking to promote the new album.

The new offering contains tracks, among them, Nyuchi, Idah Nhoro, Tora Mari, Phone and Mr Bensen which he dedicated to his late grandfather.

He features the legendary music icon Oliver Mtukudzi on idah Nhoro.

Since the start of his career, Sulu has released albums Ndomusiya Nani, Reverse Deal, Non-Stop, and Syllabus.
