Makumbe releases debut album

HARARE - Buhera-based Makumbe High school has released a maiden gospel album titled Nomoyo Wose to mark the school’s 100 years in existence.

All songs on the seven-track album , which is accompanied by a DVD compilation, were composed by ex- Makumbe High school student Elly Mhungu who co-produced the album with renowned producer Clive Mono Mukundu.

“Makumbe High school is an important school with a rich history and that is why we came up with an album to celebrate a century of existence,” said Mhungu.

“Many important citizens of this country like the late Kumbirai Kangai, Mordecai Hamutyinei, Thompson Tsodzo and renowned football agent Winston Makamure all passed through this Reformed Church in Zimbabwe school.”

Mhungu added that a school of Makumbe’s calibre deserves to mark its century of existence in a spectacular manner.

“This debut album is unlike any other that has been released by other Zimbabwean schools. The quality of the songs and the way they were produced is up there with the very best this country has produced. There is a dominant rumba/sungura beat on the album that is already creating excitement on dance floors all over the country,” he said.

The album, which was made possible with the support of Makumbe High school choir director Godfrey Takudzwa Muronda, has been described as the beginning of the school’s venture into Zimbabwe’s mainstream music industry by the school’s headmaster Honest Chiremba.

“Makumbe High, once referred to as a sleeping giant, has now awakened,” said Chiremba.

“I am also happy that the album coincides with the school’s centenary celebrations and hope it is going to help the school cascade its activities to the nation.”

Tracks on the album include Wakakosha,Basa Rakanaka,Makore Zana,Ndinoramba,Vimba NaJesu, Makanaka and Tionane.
