Zim U-19 girls impress at SA Water Polo Champs

HARARE - Zimbabwe's Under-19 water polo girls’ team was impressive at the annual South Africa Schools Water Polo tournament that ended in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs last week.

The locals finished fourth after losing to Border 8 - 6 in a tightly fought play-off.

Zimbabwe had lost 9-7 to Central Gauteng A in the semi-finals.

The tournament saw teams from South Africa’s provinces, joined by sides from Zimbabwe competing for the coveted title over five age groups.

However, for Zimbabwe, it was the Under-19 girls’ team that showed the most promise, going through their group unbeaten before coming unstuck on their way to the final.

They started the tournament strongly by beating Boland 13-2, Eastern Province B 18-1 before handing Gauteng B a 16-5 hiding.

They went on to show excellent finishing by beating beat KwaZulu Natal 7-2 before meeting a brick wall against Central Gauteng A in the semis.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe Under-19 boys’ team beat Eastern Gauteng 9-3 in the B final.

Zim Squad: Katherine Chandler, Natasha Lawson, Roxanne Shepherd, Natasha Rusch, Kimberley Smith, Bryony Crous, Sarah Gentleman, Savannah Stead, Kelsey Hunter, Tyla Walters, Brenton Catterall, Nicole Wallace.
