Junior karatekas miss out

HARARE - Zimbabwe junior karatekas failed to secure sponsorship for them to travel to Russia for this year’s fourth edition of Kyokushin Under-17 World Youth Championships that began on Friday.

The five karatekas, who failed to secure funds for air tickets, are Beavan Sibanda, Trish Muhambi, Tanaka Maponga, Brendon Jambo and Simba Chadzamira.

“It pains that we fail to secure funding for our junior karatekas. We were supposed to send five of our juniors,” Sensei Lowell Mazwei, the Public Relations Officer of the Zimbabwe Koykushinkan Association told the Daily News on Sunday.

“We secured one ticket but it was difficult for us to send one karateka as you know that these are juniors they need assistance.

“This was an important tournament for the development of karate in our country, as you know the juniors will get exposure when they travel.

“Our Sports Ministry must look into the issue of funding, look the South African government funds their teams to travel for international events.”
