So who is the best Messi or Ronaldo?

JOHANNESBURG - There is no sport which evokes as much debate as football.

No wonder one of the most famous quotes in the sport is by former Liverpool manager Bill Shankly who said:  “Football is not a matter of life and death ... it's more important than that.”

Almost every Tom and Dick has an opinion on the sport followed by billions across the globe.

If it is not about the national teams, it is about clubs or players.

One such debate which has never found common ground is the question on who is the greatest living soccer player between Brazilian Pele and Argentina’s Diego Maradona.

Those who saw Pele dominate soccer in the 1970s say there will never be any living person better that this superstar while those who witnessed Maradona’s exploits in the 80s say when it comes to skill, brilliance and sheer tenacity, the Argentina will never be matched.

While the debate of Pele and Maradona has raged on and on with no solution in sight, another soccer argument that has recently occupied the minds of people has been the contest between Real Madrid’s Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Messi.

This is another dispute which has at times spilt out of control as the disagreements in most cases reach a dead end with no solution in sight. It is an argument which has also divided household and long at times, long standing friendships.

There was talk that Messi would have had a clear advantage had Argentina won the 2014 World Cup which took place in Brazil this year.

However, the fact that the tiny midfielder-cum-striker is still to win his world title means the two will mainly be judged for performances at their clubs.

Those who support Barca insist Messi is the closest thing to either Pele or Maradona while the die-hards say he is far much better than the two.

But this is disputed by those who are Real Madrid supporters who think the industrious Portuguese is a class act and is by far the most complete player of the modern game.

I have watched the two superstars over and over again and am not in a position to give an opinion. The most important thing is that all of us who have witnessed the two in action must thank the stars for living in a generation where these two have dominated football headlines.

Because if you venture into that debate, there is unlikely to be a standing solution!

On a different note, I would like to wish Readers of the Daily News and especially sports lovers a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous 2015.

2014 is coming to an end and I presume all of us need a well-deserved break and be with our families and friends.

I will be taking a break deep in my rural areas conducting my annual rituals. I love being in the rural areas because it gives me that connection which we miss in the hustling and bustling of major cities.

I just heard my friend say kumaruzevha ndizvo!!

My friend, the only difference between Messi and Ronaldo is that Messi always draw comparisons to other football greats like Maradona, Pele etc. he breaks records that were set by football greats whilst Ronaldo is compared to Messi

Yeh agree with @Gadzi. The inference therefore is that Messi is better than Ronaldo. No one has ever compared CR7 to the Genius called Maradona, nor to the living legend called Pele. But almost every soccer pundit worth their honey has compared Messi to both the two former greats. Ronaldo strives on a workaholic attitude, while for Messi, its purely talent! He makes football look easy. Have you ever heard both Maradona and Pele talk of Ronaldo? No they talk of Messi!!! The BEST EVER is MESSI.
