Makambwa, Matsiwe victorious

HARARE - Top seeds Ngoni Makambwa and Beverly Matsiwe are the champions of this year’s second edition of the Select Healthcare Tennis tournament in the Under-18 boys and girls categories respectively.

Makambwa outclassed second-seed Mark Chigaazira 6-2, 6-3 in the final.

On his way to the finals, Makambwa struggled to overcome Munashe Chingono 6-1, 7-6 (5) in the semis.

The Mutare-based emerging star was delighted with his victory.

“This is because of the hard work I’ve put in at training,” Makambwa told the Daily News yesterday.

“It was not like a stroll in the park because Mark played well, but maybe not as consistently as he would have loved.

“I think this is one of my best performances, beating a second-seed of the tournament who is a very good player.”

Matsiwe won the Under 18 girls’ title after also beating second seeded Zahra Finnegan 6-4, 4-6, 7-5

“I’m very proud of myself for winning this title. I want to thank my coach Freeman Nyamunokora, he always encourages us to be strong even when things are not going on well,” Matsiwe, also of Mutare, said.

In the Under 14 boys’ category, Valentine Munyawire won the tournament after beating Taona Muhwandagara 6-4, 6-0, with Tsitsi Mahere claiming the title the girls section by defeating Nandi Munyulwa 6-1, 6-0.

Shingai Manyonga and Claire Machisa are the champions in the Under-12 boys and girls category after beating Ivan Bala 6-3, 6-2 and Primrose Chayambuka 6-1, 6-1 respectively.
