ZPCS fails to take prisoners to court

GWERU - Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has once again failed to deliver remanded suspects at Whawha Prison to Shurugwi Magistrates Courts, forcing presiding magistrates to postpone their cases.

This was not the first time that the country’s prison authorities have failed to transport suspects to trial.

Although no official comment was received from ZPCS officials for the failure, in the past they have blamed the shortage of fuel for the mishap which activists say is illegal and unconstitutional.

Reports suggest prisoners are only attending court once a month.

Shurugwi Magistrates’ Courts are currently flooded with murder and rape cases, with most cases being referred to other courts.

Relatives of both the accused and complainants are livid at spending a lot of money in travelling to the courts to no avail.

“They used to ferry prisoners twice a month, but the situation has since worsened to once a month,” a fuming relative of a remanded suspect said. Two weeks ago, at Gweru Magistrates’ Courts, suspects failed to attend court sessions due to unavailability of fuel coupons, a situation which was rectified after two days.

“This situation is grossly affecting the backlog as we will be forced to carry over the cases into the following legal year,” an official said, adding justice delayed was justice denied.

Whawha Prison officials declined to comment.
