National team coach, players on Uganda tour

HARARE - Zimbabwe coach Stephen Mangingo and head of national selection panel Givemore Makoni have led a Takashinga squad filled with national team players on a tour of minnows Uganda in what could be a desperate move for some positive results following the recent Bangladesh debacle.

When it was announced last week that the Zimbabwean cricket club giants would be touring the East African country for five 50-over against the Ugandan national team and a select side – many expected the trip to benefit fringe players at the club while also giving upcoming coaches a chance to hone their skills on what should be a developmental tour.

Topping the list of experienced players in the touring party is former national side captain Prosper Utseya, a veteran of 160 ODIs and four Tests.

National team pace spearhead Tinashe Panyangara has also toured alongside Test wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva and returning batsman Stuart Matsikenyeri in an apparent show of desperation for some positive results following the disastrous tour of Bangladesh, where Zimbabwe were whitewashed in three Test matches and five ODIs.

Takashinga will play five limited over matches against a Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) Chairman’s XI (basically their national team) and an Emerging XI.

The Ugandans are using the games, which start tomorrow, to prepare for the ICC Division II qualifiers next month.
