John Phiri takes aim at Mashingaidze

HARARE - Zifa board member John Phiri has launched a thinly-veiled attack on chief executive Jonathan Mashingaidze over the way the association is being administered.

Phiri, who oversees the development arm of Zifa, said the CEO kept on side-lining board members in the association’s activities.

The former Zimbabwe defender made the remarks at the World Navi Northern Region Division One Golden Boot award ceremony on Saturday.

“I think by now you know, it’s no longer a secret, when things are being done at Zifa, as board members some of these things we don’t know about them,” Phiri said.

“You only hear that such and such an event was supposed to be attended by a board member but they never came. Then you wonder and say ‘but why?’

“You hear that an invitation letter was sent.  But they never came to board members, somebody just sat on them and that was that. That’s Zifa for you. Some of these things, it’s sad.”

Phiri, believed to have earned more than 100 caps for Zimbabwe before hanging his boots in 1997, said he was frustrated by Mashingaidze’s conduct.

“As a board member you want to know what is going on,” he said. “At the end of the day it’s like board members don’t support activities that help develop our game. But it’s the fault of the CEO.”

Meanwhile, ZRP forward  Kasimero Chimbadzwa won the award after banging 22 goals in the season, 10 more that the Castle Premiership’s joint top-scorers, Charles Sibanda and Kuda Musharu.

“I wouldn’t want to compare Zifa Northern Region and the PSL. They are two different leagues. But it’s a positive feeling to score as many goals in a division that is dominated by some well-travelled players,” Chimbadzwa said.
