Mugabe's Cabinet reshuffle does not inspire investor confidence

EDITOR — The Cabinet reshuffle announced by Zanu PF’s Robert Mugabe last week on Thursday is not stimulating and does not give the people of Zimbabwe hope or bring to the country the much-needed investor confidence.

What is further disturbing is that after disregarding the country’s Constitution this week and unconstitutionally appointing Emmerson Mnangagwa and Phelekezela Mphoko as vice presidents, Mugabe has further dampened the country’s prospects of improving the lives of the people of Zimbabwe by appointing ‘deadwood’.

Mugabe’s appointments are not based on merit or on reviving the economic fortunes of the country, but are of tired minds that have played a part in bringing down the country’s economy.

It is highly regrettable that the appointments are only meant to please Mugabe’s bootlickers in the heat of the current Zanu PF’s bitter succession power struggles.

The latest Cabinet reshuffle will continue to prolong political and economic uncertainty in the country as it will not help in resuscitating the ailing industries, which have seen over 4 500 companies closing and thousands of Zimbabweans losing their jobs.

It is clear from the appointments that Mugabe does not care that there is continued and deepening poverty characterised by suffering and deprivation in the country.

As the MDC Renewal Team, we condemn the continued lack of seriousness by Zanu PF when the people of Zimbabwe are facing serious economic and social challenges in light of the economic meltdown.

Due to Zanu PF’s failure in turning around the country’s economy, the MDC Renewal Team reiterates its position that there is need to put in place a team of non-partisan technocrats under the National Technical Council (NTC) to take over the administration of the economy with immediate effect.

The NTC will address the spiralling down of the economy, rising unemployment and wide spread poverty while the country sorts out the contentious issue of electoral reforms which will prepare Zimbabwe to hold free, fair, credible and undisputed elections.

The NTC must comprise competent Zimbabweans whose mandate will be to put in place measures to turn around the economy and create conditions that will enable Zimbabweans to use their energies in building a better society for all.

The people of Zimbabwe want a government that is able to deliver jobs and that they have access to affordable social services and it is unfortunate that the Zanu PF government cannot deliver this.
