UMDC unity must be applauded

HARARE - On November 27, 2014, 5 000 Zimbabweans, 17 African diplomats, representatives of the embassies of Australia, France, Norway, India, USA and the UK as well as 31 local civil society organisations gathered to grace, witness and applaud a historic event.

This was the signing of a re-unification agreement between the MDC led by Welshman Ncube and the MDC Renewal Team.

According to the signed agreement, the re-unified party would re-discover its 1999 founding principles and values, reconnect with civil society and have the muscle to dislodge Zanu PF from power at the 2018 elections.

The re-unified party will be called the United Movement for Democratic Change (UMDC).

It was reported that Tendai  Biti profusely apologised to Ncube for all the nasty names he had called him when he decided to walk out of the MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai.

Now he could also see what the professor had seen long ago.

This is the stuff that real followers of Christ are made of.

They themselves forgive those that trespass against them and they, therefore, are not ashamed to repent and ask for forgiveness from those they trespass against. They are men and women of integrity who are also ready and willing to suffer and even to die for “principles and values.”

The fact that the international community, including 17 African diplomats and 31 local civil society organisations were there to witness the event, should not be taken lightly.

It means that for them, this was a very encouraging development towards a better future for the country.

Civil society organisations have been at the fore-front of the struggle for democracy and human rights.

They have fought and suffered, under terrible conditions but continue to fly their flags high.

They, and indeed all Zimbabweans, who are looking forward to the “Zimbabwe we want,” looked at the unity of these two parties as an important step in the right direction.

The reaction of the MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai to this union was rather disheartening.

The MDC-T said that it was unfazed by this re-unification and described it as a coalition of political dwarfs.

MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu said Tsvangirai was not losing sleep over the merger, claiming their party remained the most popular in Zimbabwe.

Gutu went on to say, “As the MDC-T, we are more concerned with pressing national issues such as the crippled economy as well as the collapsing health delivery system. We remain the largest and most popular political party in Zimbabwe by the sheer size of our enormous support base throughout Zimbabwe. We are unfazed by the coalition of political midgets and Lilliputians.”

The mentality and attitude of pride demonstrated by Gutu clearly demonstrates why Ncube, Mangoma, Biti, Ian Kay, Roy Bennet, Priscila Misihairabwi-Mushonga and others chose to leave.

They are lost in the wilderness and there is now very little difference between them and Zanu PF.

When the MDC decided to go into the GNU with Zanu PF, I warned Tsvangirai, “If you sleep with a skunk, you will come out smelling.”

It seems as though now there is no difference between MDC-T and Zanu PF. They smell the same.

The spokesperson of the newly formed UMDC, Jacob Mafume, cautioned the MDC-T saying the so-called dwarf would prove very powerful come 2018.

“We are not political dwarfs , but what we are clear about is that the people came in their numbers to celebrate the re-unification of the people and not to hero worship anyone but to work as equals,” Mafume said.

“We are not looking for a messianic figure, but we are sure the collective will of the people of Zimbabwe, if harnessed properly, will overcome the dictatorship of Robert Mugabe.

“I am personally very disappointed because I thought very highly of Obert Gutu. His writing has always encouraged me. It was, therefore, quite a shock to hear such drivel coming out of his mouth.  He says their party remains the largest and most popular party in Zimbabwe. Yes, it is popular.

“It is popular for being dribbled by Zanu PF and loosing elections even when they had posted more votes than Zanu PF. As for dwarfs, Gutu must surely know the story of David and Goliath. When one is on the right side, size does not matter because God takes over.”

Gutu said the MDC-T is more concerned with “pressing national issues such as the crippled economy as well as the collapsing health delivery system.”

What power do they have to enable them to do anything about these issues when they are not in government?

What can they hope to achieve now when they rushed into elections without any of the reforms, agreed upon in the GNU, being implemented but rushed into elections without even seeing the voters’ roll?

Instead, their president was wasting precious time womanising and borrowing millions to build a comfortable mansion for himself while Zimbabwe was crying in pain.

Gutu must not take Zimbabweans for granted.

They are not fools. At one time, Zanu PF had majority support but now they have to depend on rigging.

The formation of the UMDC was just the first step.

Gutu and all other intelligent and serious leaders in the MDC-T and all other opposition parties must now stop playing politics and come together with other serious Zimbabweans to form a real force able to save Zimbabwe from imminent disaster.

This is the time for real patriots to forget their differences and personal political ambitions and unite to remove President Robert Mugabe, and the wreck which is now Zanu PF, from the scene and proceed to build the Zimbabwe we want. Yes, we can.

The really tough battle is already won.

Jonathan Moyo, the weevil, single-handedly destroyed Zanu PF from within, just as he had said it could be done.

I have nothing but admiration for Moyo. I can’t say I understand his motives but anyone who destroys the monster called Zanu PF is a hero to me.

I have no sympathy at all for most of those Moyo has caused to be kicked out of Zanu PF, so far.

They are mostly corrupt crooks and murderers.

He needs to continue because there are still a few more of them left.

The fact that all those affected so far are accused of belonging to Vice President Joice Mujuru’s faction is beside the point.

Those who are clean should count this as a blessing in disguise and should come to join the new united opposition. I am sure the door is more than open for them.

Zapu, led by Dumiso Dabengwa, is reported to be seriously discussing about joining with others into a coalition.

The obvious and honourable thing for Zapu to do is to merge into this new UMDC as equal co-fighters.

In any free and fair elections Zapu, by itself, would be a formidable force.

It still has a significant constituency in the whole country despite all the harassment and violence that it has endured.

Its leader, Joshua Nkomo is a true national hero, equated to Madiba, Nelson Mandela.

Any opposition with the experienced leadership of Zapu within its ranks can only be a winner.

Simba Makoni’s Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn has to be part of this new opposition grouping.

This party was formed by brave people who had the guts to stand up to Zanu PF and say, enough is enough. Unfortunately, when the going got tough, some of them gave in.

Makoni’s gifts, training and experience in Sadc and in Zimbabwe are well documented.

The same is true of Lovemore Madhuku of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA).

His incisiveness and his bravery under severe punishment are legendary.

The NCA’s struggle for human rights and constitutionalism is a matter of public record.

Christians should pray that God will give him, and other gifted leaders like him, the grace to put aside self and seek unity for the good of Zimbabwe.

Divided we fall; united we stand. He, who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Where are the other opposition parties. If you guys are all serious you would understand that the ONE thing ZPF does not want is an united opposition. And you all continually fall into that trap with each party selfishly thinking they have the answer. Wake Up Zimbabwe!

Pius or Fr. Pius should know of the ills of getting too involved in partisan politics. Having diminished moral authority he is well advised to concentrate on matters of spiritual salvation, repentance rather than political deliverance. That is NOT his mission

Thank you very much MDC Renewal and MDC N for uniting the two parties, unity is the way to go forward, if Zanu PF and PF Zapu did not unite they would not have ruled this country, yes they had differences but they are the ones that liberated us that is a fact. Go NCUBE, Go BITI musateerere mbudzi dzisiri kuda unity

Morgan Tsvangirai is for 2018 president, we pray for him and our prayers shall be answered . In him we find a humble leader, prepared not by donor funds but by the spirit to work for the good of generality of Zimbabweans. May God give him more wisdom, more life and open the doors for him to rule us Zimbabweans in a democratic way. Oh God pastors who hate Morgan Tsvangirai forgive them , open their eyes so that they see what the majority people want in Zimbaawe.

ARE THESE THE PEOPLE SAYING MUGABE IS AN ASTITUTE LEADER WHO KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING?

John shava - 14 December 2014

what is important about renewal is the idea of sending a message to leaders who do not want to pass the baton that they will always be forced to do so. morgan wants to be life president of the mdc t. thats the reason it is suffixed t for his name. such kind of politics is counter productive and does not encourage democracy. i applaude those of the likes of biti who are able to say enough is enough. the norm should be for every leader of any partyto serve a limited term of office which should not the changed what so ever. morgan is history. these embassies and diplomats were once on his side but now they realise that he is not upto the job. well done ncube and biti. zvirozviyedzwa.

zvirozviyedzwa - 14 December 2014

Unity against Mugabe is what is needed. But Pius Wakatama, you seem biased, and that bias will not take us to the promised land. You forget that the re-unification event took place after the MDC-T Congress. You forget what Tendai Biti said about the Congress, labelling all MDC-T officials and supporters reptiles? He has repented for calling Professor Ncube names, but has he repented for calling Tsvangirai and everyone in MDC-T reptiles? Until arm-chair critics like you stop taking sides, the unity against Mugabe will never be achieved.

Kennedy Kaitano - 14 December 2014

No one in their right mind can be hoodwinked by unity of traitors. Only the gullible&insane can follow proven charlatans who pretend there is now unity against ZPF's misrule. How can one believe that the sellout Biti has now repented to Ncube? What has happened for Biti to see genuine love for our struggle in Ncube? Biti is only looking for support from Ncube's short sighted members in the guise of unity. But nothing came out of Ncube&Dabengwa's coalition in the 2013 elections. Why did Ncube import Mutambara to lead the breakaway MDC only to boot out the same man later? This is blatant tribalism long rejected by patriotic Zimbabweans but not the ZPF way .You cannot continue to fool the people of Zimbabwe with such myopic tribalism.

Global Cons - 15 December 2014

Uniting leaders without uniting people is a futile exercise. Any opposition grouping without MDC T is bogus. How do you celebrate unification of sell outs who negotiated for MDC T when they were not genuine ? Revolutions clean them selves of traitors and you cannot re engage them later. you want MDC T to unite with Mangoma and Biti who sold Zimbabweans as negotiators ? That group will not win against Zanu PF because they had four negotiators with Zanu PF having two but they were outmanoeuvred. MDCT did not have any negotiators and NCUBE has bought BITI AND MANGOMA hence they are finalising their transactions. They will not hoodwink Zimbabweans. Any opposition without Tsvangirai is definitely FAKE ?

applauding the unification of zpf puppies?...can't see what to applaude.

obina okeke - 15 December 2014

Politicaly mdc-t does not have the stamina to beat zanu pf so in as much as people dream of tsvangirai being president they must dream on.

Thando - 15 December 2014

Mavetera, spot on.Biti&Mangoma negotiated for the GNU only to turn around & foolishly blame Tsvangirai shortly after the 2013 election.A certain idiot says Biti has repented to Ncube.WHAT NONSENSE! Both men are desperate for grass root support which they lost permanently. Dabengwa boasted that he blocked MT's outright win in 2008 thus denying us the much needed change. He teamed up with Ncube a fellow sellout&as expected got not a single seat in the 2013 elections. Right now Biti&company refuse to face the people in a by-election for fear of losing the seats they won on an MDC T ticket.

Gurukushwa - 15 December 2014

Why use the MDC name? You think there is magic in it? No. The magic is Chamatama - Mr Morgan Tswangirai. Any unity without him is not going to succeed. It doesn't matter its attended by America Britain or even if you call Obama himself and leave Tswangirai, you will have done nothing. Political opposition in Zimbabwe is MORGAN. There is no use for donors to waste their money sponsoring Zanu PF extensions - we want political opposition and a strong one - which can only be found in Tswangirai and every patriotic Zimbabwean knows that. Let those sell out live in their dream land.

clement moyo - 15 December 2014

Zvimwe zvinopedza power sure. Do all you people think Tsvangirai alone can defeate Zanu PF. Never in a thousand times. I for one has been a Tsvangirai suppoter from way back up until he lost the last election. I need to realise value for my vote and the value lies in Zanu PF being defeated, but this vote has not achieved anything for the past 3 or so elections. And please do you want me to keep put my vote there NO lets be serious, we need an alternative. Again Biti's record is there for all to see. He managed the Fiscus of the country and the Numbers are so encouraging, almost 2 digit economic growth, zero budget deficit, the industry was begining to breathe. Chematama has the grassroots support but it is waning i can tell you, the guy is not smart at all. Again looking at the comments from the Tsvangirai followers, it is all ass licking with no facts at all. Typical of Mugabe ass licking buy gay gangsters. We want material facts, not hero worshiping. Biti can do far much better than Tsvangirai. Haana chaanoona Tsvangi wenyu. iSu vekusvinura takotozviona kare, kana iro Dinasour re Zanu rinada maopponents akaita saana Save ma Walk over. Wake up Zimbos.

chama - 15 December 2014

As a party led by professional traitors, this UMDC is only there to cause terrible confusion among Zimbos who need real change. Clearly,Tsvangirai is fighting too many enemies especially such traitors as Biti&Ncube. The two are more interested in their pockets & this has unduly delayed our true freedom.Biti & Ncube are mere hypocrites who want to pull down every Zimbabwean. It's a real uphill struggle for the true MDC T to win an election against sabotours from within?Yes some will say ,we are therefore wasting time but, ''HATINGARAMBIRI MAKUDO MUMUNDA.''We have to fight on till final victory.Easy come,Easy go!

CONFUSION - 16 December 2014

I for one will never be deceived by this UMDC. With or without sellouts, Zimbabwe will be very free.Biti managed the fiscus well because he then belonged to MDC T;hence his refusal to leave the seat he won on an MDC T ticket.I don't care how many diplomats attended the signing of the treacherous unity agreement between Ncube&Biti.

garandichauya - 16 December 2014

Guys, stop ass licking and hero worshiping these dictators. We are in desperate need of a leader who will provide us wth a life jacket before we sink in this Titanic Zimbabwe. Tsvangison NO, Mnangagwa NO, Mgabe,NO, Mujuru NO. We want new entrants at least, Denying Tsvangirai or Mugabe is not DENYING JESUS, HEY GUYS, WAKE UP!!! Tsvangson lacks strategy to unseat Mugabe, he has won all the past elections but has neva bn a president , why? kupusa, ndimi vapfana vataidyira mutakura wamabva nawo kumba nekupusa, dzakanyubwida dzanzi Prime Minister idzo dzaifanira kunzi President, i bet with my LYF, Tsvangirai will never defeat zanu!!!

citizen - 16 December 2014

Supporting Tsvangirai is not hero worshiping at all.Put together Biti&Ncube will never produce anything meaningful in Zimbabwe. It's foolish to blame one man losing well known stolen elections.Several times MT has called for mass action but to no avail. He even offered to personally lead the demonstrations against misrule, but we always fail him. Some youths recently matched for the promised 2 million jobs but they were labelled agents of the West&MDC T supporters out to embarrass RGM then at the SADC conferrence. Arm chair critics have no place in Zim's struggle.

RELEVANCE - 16 December 2014

Having a university degree does not give one the licence to become a Zim president. Our current president acquired several university degrees but he ruined the country's economy. He even stole a PHD for his wife.Professors like Ncube, Madhuku, Mutambara, Canaan Banana etc have totally failed in politics.Biti himself is said to be the best law brains in Zimbabwe but where is he politically?Do we have to follow political prostitutes who hop from one political party to another?

Clearly,Chengli is a confused person. What'll Biti&Ncube do to thwart ZPF's rigging which both failed to do in previous elections? Was their previous failure deliberate just to frustrate Tsvangirai? But Tsvangirai suffered terrible violence from ZANU PF! Yes it is our fear of violence that ZPF uses to cling to power even if they lose elections. Then we want to blame only one man for the whole nation's failure. We want one person to do everything for us simply because he is the leader. ''SIMBA REHOVE RIRIMUMVURA WEE!! What chance do we have to give to sell-outs??
