Masekela to grace Kunonga album launch

HARARE - South African jazz and afrobeat legend Hugh Masekela will be the guest of honour at the launch of Victor Kunonga’s fourth and new album, Kwedu, on December 16 at the Alliance Fraincaise Old Mutual Theatre.

The 75-year-old music icon’s imminent trip to Harare was confirmed by Ngoma Nehosho,a Harare-based music promotions company that is organising the album launch.

“We have the pleasure and privilege of having Hugh Masekela coming to be the guest of honour at the launch,” said Walter Wanyanya, a representative of Ngoma Nehosho.

Masekela recently praised the quality of the 12-track album that was mastered in Cape Town by former Ilanga keyboardist Keith Farquaharson.

“Victor’s album is fresh, dynamic international sound rooted in African rhythms, musically very superior; he will be a major surprise to the world,” said Masekela.

Unlike most Zimbabwean album launches, the one for the 12-track Kwedu will not be open to members of the public.

“It (the album launch)is mainly for our media, radio and television partners and those that have assisted us to make this project a reality to have an intimate experience of his new offering that we are sure you will enjoy,” said Wanyanya who also doubles up as Kunonga’s manager.

Wanyanya believes the new 12-track album is the rising star’s best ever.

“In Kwedu, as the name says, Victor was talking about kwedu kwatakabva (Where we came from as a people). On the album he demonstrates why many regard him as the master of Zimbabwean / African rhythms,” he recently told the Daily News.

According to Kunonga’s manager, the new album, which is rooted in African guitars, drums and rhythms, was produced and mixed by Kunonga himself.

“It was all recorded here in Zimbabwe and he produced and mixed it himself with the help of talented musicians and sound engineers. Victor is a perfectionist when it comes to his music and he has taken his time working on his latest album,” he said.

“The album is a special dedication to Sekuru Kunonga, the late Thomas Deve, Paul Brickhill as well as the late king and the queen of Zimbabwean Mbira, Adam Chisvo and Chiwoniso Maraire.”

Songs on the album are Kubuda Ura,Tinotenda,Cheuka, Kure Kwatakabva,Wagadzirira,Ruvengo, Kumagobo,Ruzevha,Kushanda,Ikhotha eyikhotayo, Mhofu and Ndoenda.

Kunonga sampled some of the new tracks on November 28 at the 7Arts Theatre where he shared the stage with internationally popular Mokoomba.

His three other albums are Handinete (2011), Uyo (2006) and Such Is Life-Ndanyengetedzwa (2003).
