Top seeds progress to quarterfinals

HARARE - Top seeds in the Under-18 boys and girls Ngoni Makambwa and Beverly Matsiwe progressed to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Select Healthcare junior tennis tournament here yesterday.

Makambwa struggled to overcome Andrew Kunaka 6-3, 7-5 to sail through to the quarterfinals.

He will now face Richard Ngwarwi who beat Jason Chigaazira 6-0, 7-5.

In other second round matches played yesterday, Munashe Chingono beat Kean Makuwaza 6-0, 6-1 while Derrick Nemanya dismissing Farai Mahere 6-1, 6-3 to book his place in the last eight.

In the girls category, Matsiwe overcame Dipak Patel 6-0, 6-0 to reach quarterfinals.

Matsiwe will now face Lisa Mugadza, who beat Precious Nkomo 6-0, 6-2 in the second round stage.

Some of the girls who progressed to the quarterfinals yesterday are Kundai Manyonga, who defeated Bionia Kaseke 6-0, 6-0 and Karen Machisa, who outclassed Shalon Maquina 6-0, 6-0.

Also, Yvette Mukondya got the better of her sister Yvonne 6-0, 6-1 to book her place in the last eight while Zahra Finnegan beat Shyleen Thole 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
