Govt compulsorily acquires ART land

HARARE - Listed stationary and batteries maker Art Corporation (ART) has engaged government over compulsory acquisition of part of its timber plantations.

Franklin Mukarakate, the group’s company secretary, said the Mutare land “is 42 hectares at the extreme end of the estate”.

The group has applied to government for a 99-year lease to secure the land.

“We previously donated 700 hectares, but there is still appetite for additional land,” Mukarakate told Business Live, adding that “it is highly unlikely that the 99-year lease application is going to be dismissed”.

“My understanding from government is that commercial timber plantations should not be affected as it is bad for the economy,” he said.

This comes as the President Robert Mugabe-led government has compulsorily acquired land from several companies.

Recently, there were reports that Zanu PF leadership in Masvingo planned to acquire South Africa-based Tongaat Hulett’s 29 000 hectares of sugar cane plantations in the Lowveld to resettle the landless in the province.

Last year, government — through the Mines ministry — ordered the repossession of 28 000 hectares of Zimbabwe Platinum Mines’ land, in a move it said was part of efforts to maximise benefits from the country’s mineral resources.

In January 2013, the Lands ministry acquired Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed horticultural concern Interfresh Holdings’ Mazoe Citrus Estates land measuring 1 599 hectares — representing 52 percent of the value of its immovable and biological assets.
