Zim can save 1 500MW annually'

HARARE - Zimbabwe can save over 1 500 megawatts (MW) annually by adopting international best practices in energy usage in all sectors of the economy, Sustainable African Energy Consortium (Saec) has said.

In its national energy efficiency audit for Zimbabwe released on Thursday, Saec revealed that energy saving was key to reducing power shortages.

Edward Chikuni, the Saec lead consultant and principal investigator said major recommendations for improving energy efficiency in Zimbabwe include the establishment of company energy policies with active support from top management for continual energy improvement.

He also added that there was need for “the establishment of integrated data gathering systems within entities to gather, verify and store data on energy use and corresponding energy drivers”.

Zimbabwe is currently battling acute power shortages and is seeking various ways, such as energy efficiency and new capital injections in the sector, to enhance power production.

The southern African country produces about 1 200MW against a daily national consumption of 2 200MW resulting in intense load shedding for both households and industry — impacting negatively on economic recovery efforts.‘

we need new efficient power plants in Zimbabwe. as much as people need to know how to save power isn't it ideal to first provide the resource and then use it wisely? other than saving electricity which is never there!

It is not practical for a country with less than that much capacity. I take it that someone intended to say that the country would save an equivalent of of 1500 MW plant. power units are in KWh whose equivalent plant can be estimated by dividing by the annual hours of 8760.

This article is so incorrect it is actually pure nonsense. "Zimbabwe generates 1200MW per day"???? Really? What is actually meant is Zimbabwe can deliver 1200MW of power at its maximum output. It requires 2200MW at peak load times (mornings and evenings). Energy usage is measured and billed in kw.hrs for domestic and commercial users, whilst industrial users should also be billed on peak demand (measured in KVA or MVA), which probably doesnt happen.
