Mukondiwa off to Las Vegas

HARARE - Annual National Sports Awards (Ansa) nominee Patrick Mukondiwa will miss the ceremony next week as he will be attending a World Boxing Council (WBC) convention in Las Vegas, United States.

Mukondiwa, who was nominated for the award of Technical Official of the Year, will battle it out for the gong with Rick Fulton (triathlon) and Joyce Muchenu (basketball) at the awards ceremony to be held next Wednesday.

The WBC Convention is set to run from December 14 to 19 at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, which has become the capital of boxing having hosted several blockbuster bouts in the history of the sport.

Mukondiwa, who was one of the three judges when Zimbabwe’s Charles Manyuchi successfully defended his WBC welterweight title against Colombian Devis Caceres last month, leaves the country this Thursday for the event and will only return on the 20th.

In Las Vegas, Mukondiwa will get a chance to exchange notes with fellow boxing judges and referees during a seminar organised by the boxing federation.

“All members of the organization express, issues and problems, seeking and finding the best solutions for the benefit of the sport worldwide,” said the WBC.

“It’s also an opportunity for promoters in the world to express their demands for the benefit of boxers they’re representing.

“In addition to medical committees, classifications are provided; also a seminar for referees and judges are is available and invaluable.”
