Dynamos extend dominance over Bosso

HARARE - Dynamos won the Gushungo Victory Cup here yesterday to maintain their eight-year stranglehold over rivals Highlanders, who they beat after penalty shootout.

The match had ended 0-0 after regulation time and went straight to penalties.

Bosso had themselves to blame for the loss as they clearly dominated the game for larger parts but failed to wrap up the match in normal time.

Even in the penalty shoot, after scoring the first two kicks and Dynamos missed their first two, Highlanders went on to miss the last three while DeMbare scored.

Highlanders converted their first two spot kicks through Charles Sibanda and Innocent Mapuranga while Augustine Mbara and Fabrice Mbimba missed for the Glamour Boys.

However, Valentine Ndaba, Gabriel Nyoni and Munyaradzi Diya all missed their respective kicks with Ocean Mushure, Oscar Machapa and Blessing Moyo scoring for DeMbare to hand them the inaugural cup.

Highlanders interim coach Mark Mathe said the game was lost in regulation.

“I think this is one of our best performances against Dynamos in recent years,” Mathe said after the match.

“In the previous matches they used to dominate us but today we have matched them man-for-man. Everything was spot on; we were compact in all the departments today. Unfortunately things did not go well in the penalty shoot.

“I felt if we had been more clinical in front of goal especially in the first half, it could have been a different story. I am happy with the overall performance of the team. It means there is future after all.”

The Bulawayo giants came into the game high on confidence as they looked psyched up to finally break the jinx that has seen them play second fiddle to DeMbare in the past eight years.

Bosso went on to dominate the early exchanges but could not trouble goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva allowing Dynamos to settle into the match.

“I think our opponents played well today but I am happy we managed to put another silverware in the cabinet again,” Dynamos coach Calisto Pasuwa.

Both teams had a chance to win the game in normal time but they were wasteful in front of goal. Dynamos’ Simba Sithole was guilty of missing several clear cut chances while Charles Sibanda, Simba Sithole and Simon Munawa took turns to miss for Highlanders.

For their efforts, Dynamos walked away with $45 000 while the Highlanders pocketed $35 000.
