606 couples wed at UFIC mass wedding

HARARE - Hundreds of couples tied the knot at a mass wedding in Harare yesterday, part of an event organised by Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa’s United Family International Church (UFIC).

Some 606 couples took part in the ceremony at the City Sports Centre in the capital. About 140 of them were reaffirming their vows.

Makandiwa prayed for the couples and gave them words of wisdom before jetting off for a two-week mission in Ghana, United Kingdom and South Africa.

Couples travelled from all over the country to take part in the ceremony and exchanged vows in the crowd, with men dressed in black suits and the women donning traditional white or crème gowns.

UFIC church has gained fame but this was the first time it was holding a mass wedding for their followers.

The decor and flower bouquets were all red, white and yellow.

Makandiwa told the couples to be grateful for receiving their wedding blessing at such a gathering at a time divorce cases were on the rise.

“I have travelled all over the world; I have never seen any tourist attraction as beautiful as this,” Makandiwa said.

“Living in such a time when marriages are breaking up and having such an event taking place is a blessing.

“This is what I used to tell you that it is not all about money. Whatever you want to achieve, you can achieve.”

According to church officials, 900 couples had booked for the mass wedding but about 300 failed to secure their paperwork before the day.

Another mass wedding ceremony will be held beginning of next year.

“This is not a marriage certificate but a marriage blessing certificate,” Makandiwa said.

He also revealed that the church recently bought 100 acres of land for $1 million in Mt Hampden where the UFIC headquarters will be built and a church to accommodate 100 000 people.

Makandiwa said the church had also acquired 215 acres in Chinhoyi where they will also use a nearby mountain for prayer.

The celebrity gospel preacher said his church has also been given the green light to continue construction at its Chitungwiza church site which was stopped over a year ago by local government.

“Some were saying we stopped because of money but that has never been a problem in this church,” he said.

“It is because they have not done a thorough research of our God… This is an official certificate from the government’s environment committee to say we have looked at everything and you are allowed to continue and next year we resume.”

Makandiwa said construction had to be halted because government felt that the site needed to be connected to the main sewer system.

“We said our reason was the main line seems to be always congested therefore we wanted to use a septic tank which could be emptied anytime,” he said.

Turning to a reported tax investigation into church finances, Makandiwa said UFIC’s operations were found to be totally clean and compliant.

“About four years ago, I told our finance director to make sure all taxes are paid and records are in order,” he said.

“I knew I was going to be investigated because there are people who believe a man of God cannot live such a life without diverting church funds. If there was anything, you should have heard by now.”

He alleged that the development was initiated by “enemies” bent on denting UFIC’s image.

“When I come back (from a conference in Ghana) I will tell you who has been behind all this,” he said.

“You will be surprised. A lot of our enemies know that Makandiwa does not talk too much but I think it will be necessary in the next few months.”

Can somebody please explain to me this concept of mass wedding. Is it in the same line with mass production?I am afraid quality is compromised here.In my opinion the day of wedding is a special one for the weds(not masses) .ALL THE ATTENTION AND FOCUS SHOULD BE ON ME,ALL THE SPACE MUST BELONG TO ME.It should be my day.Anywhere if it was out of choice, then congratulations.

Waal, awesome. Pane chakanaka hapashai vanoshora, this is a landmark in Church history, vamwe vanofara zvichiitwa kwavo chete. Going to a Conference in Ghana is no cult thing. Panyika dzese dzataurwa yawangoona iGhana chete? Is there any church with congregates who are richer than Ufic and cars that are more than those that throng the City sports centre, Ufic sons and daughters are rich than any other churches.

we make the headlines, we yield the power, we act and they react, we're enjoying this life and we're going to enjoy the next life they may not express it but they know truth, everybody does and no one will ask: 'Who is Makandiwa?' coz we all can see, he is Zimbabwe remembered..
