Zim step up Car 7s preps

HARARE - Zimbabwe have stepped up a gear in preparation for the Confederations of African Rugby (Car) Sevens Cup to be held over the weekend at Prince Edward School in Harare.

The Cheetahs though will be without the pair of Lenience Tambwera and Biselele Tshamala, who picked injuries on Monday.

“Generally camp has gone well so far and we stand a good chance of going one better after suffering a disappointing loss to Kenya in last year’s edition. We are ready as ever,” Zimbabwe Sevens coach Gilbert Nyamutsamba said yesterday.

The Cheetahs have got good balance in the squad with a mixture of young red-hot talent and experienced players, which might work in their advantage in neutralising tournament favourites such Kenya and South Africa.

It’s the first time in a while Zimbabwe has had so much depth in almost every position, an indicator that the future looks bright in the shorter format of the game, where the country has enjoyed more success compared to the fuller version.

Explosive Golden Lions forward Lambert Groenewald his likely to debut this weekend in the Sevens format. A serious disruptive ball carrier, Groenewald could light up in this format with his sheer pace.

Zimbabwe owe their fans, starved of good international rugby, a good outing.

Zim Sqaud: Jacques Leitao, Fortune Chipendu, Gardner Nechironga, Stephan Hunduza, Hilton Mudariki, Takudzwa Kumadiro, Teddy Hwata, Njabulo Ndlovu, Boyd Rouse, Mkululi Ndhlela, Tafadzwa Chitokwindo, Morgan Vangue, Graham Kaulback, Kuda Chiwanza, Lambert Groenewald, Riaan O’Neill, Shayne Makombe.
