Buffaloes Junior blow golden chance

HARARE - Eastern Region Division One Soccer League log leaders Buffaloes Junior dropped two crucial points that could have seen them win the promotion ticket at the weekend after they were held one-all by Ruwa United.

With second-placed Mutare City suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Eastern Stars at Sakubva Stadium on Saturday, Buffaloes Junior failed to take advantage.

If Buffaloes Junior were able to collect maximum points against Ruwa they would have sealed promotion as they would have reached an unassailable 66 points, four ahead of Mutare City with one game before the end of the season.

“We are now on the verge of gaining promotion. We are happy but we drooped two crucial points that could have seen us crowned the champions,” Eddie Dube, the Buffaloes Junior manager, told the Daily News yesterday.

“Our game against Ruwa was very tough but we are happy that we managed to collect one point.”

The Mutare-based side now face Mwenezana in their last league match this weekend and Dube said they would approach the game with caution.

“Yes, we have an advantage going into our match against Mwenezana but we have told our players that the league is not over we need to be more cautious going into this match,” he said.

“There is no an easy game at this stage, we are going to put maximum effort in our match against Mwenezana because we need those three points for us to win the league.

“As the technical department we are happy with the performance of the boys this season, players were fighting each other thus enables us to be where we are currently.

“Our aim is to finish the league on top of the log standings and I believe we can achieve our targets because our players are very hungry for success.’

Buffaloes Junior have some former Premiership players in their ranks which gives them much needed experience in the title run-in.

Veteran striker Evans Chikwaikwai and Farai Banda are some of the players who now turn-out for the Mutare-based.

The Eastern Region is the only Division One league that is yet to be decided after Flame Lilly, Tsholotsho FC and Whawha won the other three divisions.
