ZPC dominate Soccer Stars

HARARE - Castle Premiership log leaders ZPC Kariba provided the highest number of players on the 2014 Soccer Star of the Year calendar after yesterday’s selection meeting in Harare.

The Kariba-based side, who are on the verge of winning the league title in their debut season, have goalkeeper Tendai Hove, striker Limited Chikafa and defender Dennis Dauda on the list.

Defending champions Dynamos provided two players in the form of defender Themba Ndlovu and midfielder Stephen Alimenda.

CAPS United midfielder Tendai Samanja was also rewarded for his consistent performances after he also made the final XI.

There was also room for the league’s two leading goal scorers Charles Sibanda of Highlanders and Kuda Musharu of How Mine, who have scored 12 goals apiece.

Hwange’s striker Evans Rusike, who has netted eight goals this season, was also voted among the Soccer Stars.

Harare City captain David Kutyauripo and FC Platinum skipper Thabani Kamusoko complete the list.

The 2014 Soccer Star of the Year banquet will be held on December 12 in the capital and it looks like it will be three-way battle for the top gong between Dauda, Hove and Ndlovu.

Dauda has been one of the stand-out performers in the Premiership with his captivating performances at the heart of the ZPC defence.

Together with Hove, the two have catapulted the league novices to the brink of championship glory.

Speaking after the final XI was announced yesterday, ZPC Kariba captain Hove believes they deserve all the plaudits they are getting.

“I think we deserve to have the highest number of players in the best 11 because we worked hard throughout the season. There was unity in the team thus why we are on top of the log standings currently,” Hove told the Daily News on Sunday.

“To be considered as part of the Soccer Star in my first year in the Premiership is because of the hard work I put in training.

“I also listened to the advice from my superiors and it helped me to be where I am today.

“In the previous years I was playing in Division One but due to lack of media coverage not many people knew me but I think I was playing at the same level.”

Harare City captain Kutyauripo, 37, was happy with his inclusion on the calendar.

“I think its hard work that has seen me getting to where I’m today. After a very long career, I have finally made it onto the Soccer Star selection,” an ecstatic Kutyauripo said.

“I played for many teams in my career but I have never made it onto the calendar but I told myself this is not the end of the world I’ll keep on working hard.

“I want also to urge the youngsters to stay away from drugs. Look at my age; I don’t smoke and drink which has made my career to last this long. I’m always in the gym and I think my hard work has finally paid off.”
