Sadc complicit in electoral theft - Tsvangirai

HARARE - Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai yesterday accused the South African government and other Sadc leaders of aiding and abetting President Robert Mugabe in rigging Zimbabwean elections since 2000.

Tsvangirai’s allegations come in the wake of the long-awaited 27-page “Khampepe report” by then Pretoria High Court judge Dikgang Moseneke and Johannesburg High Court Judge Sisi Khampepe that revealed that the 2002 elections which Tsvangirai “lost” to Mugabe were not free or fair.

South African presidents Thabo Mbeki, Kgalema Motlanthe and Jacob Zuma have spent more than six years fighting against public release of the report.

Tsvangirai accused Mbeki of being complicit in ensuring that Mugabe reduced Zimbabwe’s elections “to nothing more than deadly military operations against civilians and the opposition.”

“Regrettably, we have had some complicit leaders in Sadc and the regional body itself has not done much to ensure truly free and fair elections, particularly in Zimbabwe where the president has even become the regional leader, notwithstanding his tainted legitimacy,” Tsvangirai told a news conference in Harare yesterday.

“As I said earlier, the report comes as no surprise to us at all. We are deeply appalled by it and we unreservedly deplore what was done by the South African government to try to sweep this report under the carpet.”

Tsvangirai also alleged that Mugabe “stole” the 2008 elections with the tacit approval of Mbeki, who has staunchly denied the charges.

“With the benefit of hindsight, we can understand why he (Mbeki) was at pains to ensure this report of the earlier election of 2002 was not made public,” Tsvangirai said.

“To an extent, the spirited efforts to hide this report show that South Africa has wittingly or unwittingly aided the subversion of democratic processes in Zimbabwe, wantonly violating official Sadc guidelines on the conduct of free and fair elections, which they helped to create.

“It would seem that Mugabe’s treachery should be a cause of instant outrage within Sadc itself, potentially stripping him of the chairmanship but again, the report clearly shows that this man does not operate in isolation of others in the region.

“Sadc’s failure to censure, denounce and punish Mugabe’s actions continues to represent a travesty of democracy.”

i wonder what this noise this idiot called tsvangirai is going about, it is just a report like any other report written about those elections. what makes him think that the said report he is basing his outburst is an authoritative report like an academic writing.

nyere - 20 November 2014

if you are fed up of sadc, then give up politics. outside of sadc, mdc t has no relevance. gnu was a result of sadc intervention. you may as well throw in the white towel @tionei. that would be a good idea seeing that your leader is more concerned about his michato(s) than leading the country. he is also another handiende.

Musangokomenda zvamusina kunzwisisa. What is SADC if they can not uphold what they formed. who needs SADC Tsvangirai or Mugabe. I think Mugab needs SADC more than Tsvangirai and Zimbabweans at Large. Who has been helping Mugabe to still elections. it was SADC Leaders Like Mbeki when he said there is no crisis in Zimbabwe after it took a month to announce Presidential results. what did SADC do . they went ahead to form a useless GNU which Mugabe Never recognise at all. Now where is SADC when people are in severe poverty. who congratulated Mugabe when he stole 2013 election. SADC even thanked him for stealing our right to elect a leader of our choice by giving him a SADC chairmanship. the good is God is watching all this. It's Mujuru today and tomorrow Mujuru will have a platform to say all what has been going on in the house secretly. Watch Julius Malema and Jecob Zuma today. know what to say before you open your dirty mouth. don't just comment as if we are donkeys who does not have brains at all. Tsvangirai does not need SADC at all because he never benefited from that useless organisation not even once.

Danga Remombe - 20 November 2014

We don't need SADC at all its a bunch of crooks

Llolo - 20 November 2014

Bazukulu iSADC leyo akusiyona group yabakhokheli? What do u expect from a group of African leaders, lani shuwa?

UNCLE REAL - 20 November 2014

me thinks Morgan had perfect chance to excel but the lack of staesmanship failed him, he rushed to celebrate before the struggle was started. He let us down during the GNU period. Now we looking beyond him and his gang wherever there are. Even it means going back to Zanu to bring the crop of statesmanship we want. Ngilapha nje ngisafuna ukwazi ukuthi inkomo from his farm how dd he manage to wipe them all out? Pho ilizwe?

UNCLE REAL - 20 November 2014

The AU and SADC are nothing but toothless bull dogs with a very weak bark at that. The countries in the SADC region in particular are benefiting from the chaos that's going on in Zimbabwe. Agriculture was almost no existent in Zambia before the chaotic land reform programme, Professionals, Doctors, Nurses, Tecnicians and Artisans never had reason to leave their beloved motherland to go and become second class rated citizens in Botswana, South Africa, Namibia and now even Mozambique before all this chaos ensued. So with all the benefits they are reaping from our chaos, SADC would not want those gains reversed by change of leadership. The current situation here is perfect for their economies and people like Mbeki reportedly have gold mines in our country - indigenisation my left foot. Just like all other similar reports, this one will also gather dust somewhere and we will never hear about it again. Tsvangirai is right to raise his voice about it, he is complaining about an opportunity of change and progress that was stolen from you and me.

Dr Know - 20 November 2014

tsvangirai was too weak to win the last election. he took his foot off the pedal in persuite of women and lost relevance when it mattered most. by the time he gathered himself, the election was already gone. mdc escpecially t cannot cry baby now because you must be aware that when a leader looses focus that becomes the end of the struggle. the frustration of his weak leadership is the reason for biti and co's departure from the mdc tsangis. the man lost the game fair. more so, he has also become a handiende.

zvirozviyedzwa - 20 November 2014

I personally hate SADC to the bone. They have tolerated and rewarded evil and to the benefit of their countries especially RSA which has tapped into our scarce financial base as we keep going down to spend our money buying goods which we should have been manufacturing. Their being overtaken by Nigeria was because of the GNU which had normalised a bit of Zimbabwe's economy, they are soon catching up with Nigeria again if what is happening in ZanuPf is not checked.

maita - 20 November 2014

Save kana tawana rusununguko you must withdraw from this toothless bulldog called SADC. It habours tyrants and weavils. Shit

Obsession with hatred, malice and venom. Unjustified Venom against Tsvangirai because he should have blindly heeded Mangoma's letter. Anybody who wanted to lead should have subjected himself to the people at the just ended congress. How can a leader be removed by a memo or a letter? guys why do you have double standards? Wht the mangomas wanted is exactly what is happening in ZANU PF now. Vote of no confidence on leaders by people who don't constitute a quorum. If Biti and company are so bright and strategists par excellence as they claim let them prove it to Zimbabweans. Let people judge. Wisdom is judged by its results. What do they have to show? Dont be so obsessed with hatred of an opposition leader to a point of being so naive. Tsvangirai like everyone here commenting has every democratic right to comment on national issues. If he is a failure, the question is what are you doing you critics and all the professors to help Zimbabwe's situation? Insulting and insulting Morgan….? Wooo! Please dont allow hatred and demons cloud your thinking to that level. History shall judge you harshly… just watch this space!

VISION 2020 - 20 November 2014

Morgan is right there were no free Elections in Zimbabwe. Now today the country is right down on its knees because of these fraudulent Elections. No wonder why those who knows how to play the gimmick they do not want to leave Office. At times we have to blame ourselves since we always tolerate a lot of nonsense

Karigamombe - 20 November 2014

karigamombe, its true we tolerate everything and that has become our weak point as a people. we hero worship these leaders such that they end up doing whatever they want with us. it defeats me to think that people kill each other over these leaders of ours. their kids don't have time for monkeying about like we are doing at the moment being bussed everywhere for a cause that has nothing to do with our personal development or worse still that of the nation at large. mazimba tinonyadzisa. kutukirira vamwe then we go back to the gettos where we are greeted with stinking water and darkness. time is precious hama.

zvirozviyedzwa - 21 November 2014

Yes, SADC and SA are most certainly complicit. It is disgusting. God is going to blow the roof off ALL the lies. Ordinary people are merely trampled upon. Only the truth will save us. Anything else will bring God's judgment!

Maid Marion - 21 November 2014

To hell with this Retard . Give him good advisers not gold diggers who let him Rom the streets with his zip wide open and they let his mouth rant before his brains have even started functioning . Morgan lead this country with this blundering he is doing day and night haaa that will be end of the world .

Mose Ruddolf ( Hitler) - 21 November 2014

Morgan looking for relevance. Too late the battle to lead in now inside Zanu Pf. Now you are just another opposition party.

Nyakudirwa - 21 November 2014

Now with only a heap of rabbles remaining of what was zanu I can smell change which we zimbabwean had been crying for . the head of that change is none other than Captain Morgan If there is anyone out there still thinking zanu will be in govt after next election is like wishing a dead donkey to resurrect and be used again to carry bags of maize to a grinding mill .ZANU is dead finish and klaa.Natural death has caught up with it and is awaitng to be buried in 2018. Hamba Mugabe hoza Morgan bwaa one time kwa matibili!!!!!..
