Dzuwa welcomes Davis Cup home tie

HARARE - Non-playing captain Martin Dzuwa says Zimbabwe’s Davis Cup home tie with Bosnia and Herzegovina in March will help revive interest in the sport.

Zimbabwe will host the European team in the 2015 Euro-Africa Zone Group II, the country’s first home tie in years.

Home Davis Cup matches were a hit during Zimbabwe’s stay in the elite World Group.

“It’s great to have this tie here at Harare Sports Club. It will regenerate interest among the public here in Zimbabwe,” Dzuwa said.

“The boys have started to talk how the court is supposed to be and to prepare for our opponents. Already this shows there is progress. We are all excited.”

Bhunu says Zimbabwe need at least $100 000 to upgrade Harare Sports Club’s tennis courts to International Tennis Federation standards.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean female tennis ace Cara Black has also lauded Zimbabwe’s promotion into the Euro/Africa Zone Group II. She said:

“The Davis Cup is the most prestigious event in men’s tennis for over the last 100 years. And to have the success we have had with Byron and Wayne (Black) and Kevin (Ullyett) was a fantastic experience.

“And now our up and coming team with Mark Fynn, Takanyi (Garanganga), Benjamin Lock, it’s a very exciting stage, it’s looking up for the country.”
