Northern Region selects first Soccer Stars

HARARE - World Navi Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) log leaders Flame Lilly and third-placed Mushowani Stars provided two players each on the inaugural Soccer Stars XI list, selected in Harare yesterday.

For Flame Lily, Gift Phiri and Motion Mponda made it on the list while Mushowani captain Zivanai Mhanda and Tendai Mutandi were also included among the second-tier league’s best players of the season.

The vote was conducted by a 32-member panel consisting of sports writers alongside league coaches and referees.

The winner and his two runners-up will be announced at a banquet at the end of this month in the capital.

The winner of the award will have an opportunity to go for trials in Japan’s J-League. The league is sponsored by Japanese car exporter World Navi.

“I think the process went on well, it was very fair and transparent,” Willard Manyengavana, the Northern Region League chairman, said yesterday.

Finalists: Gift Phiri, Motion Mponda (Flame Lilly), Zivanai Mhanda, Tendai Mutandi  (Mushowani), Enasio Peresu (Ngezi Platinum), Eddie Nyika (Commando), Bright Chayambuka (Twalumba), Convenience Hungwe (ZRP FC), Peter Rupiya (Seven Flames), Mcdonald Motsi (Gunners), Chamunorwa Kawondera (Blue Swallows).
